AUSTIN (KXAN) - An elementary school principal caught several students with marijuana and under the influence of marijuana on campus at Palm Elementary School in Southeast Austin.
In a letter to parents following the Nov. 30 incident, principal Joanne Garza wrote: "Please be assured that the health and safety of our students is our primary concern at Palm Elementary School."
An Austin Independent School District police spokesperson said Garza discovered the fifth-grade students on the playground after school hours. A student was arrested for possession of marijuana in a drug-free zone.
"It's upsetting. It's just awful," said Palm Elementary School parent Joyce Reynosa. "It's awful, especially that young."
Reynosa has a fifth-grade son at Palm Elementary School and took the opportunity to talk to him about drugs.
"I told him it's important for him to let me know - no matter what it is or who does it or if they're his friends or not - even if you see it, just tell me. That's all you've got to do," said Reynosa.
