Poll question: How long is your daily commute?
I figure its a safe guess that most people, even here in the hippie liberal corner of the web, have to get to work somehow. Be it on our own two feet, via public transit, some sort of hybrid that runs on camel farts, or a regular old car, how long do you spend getting there?

1. The time it takes to get a cup of coffee in the kitchen
and go out to the computer room in the garage-about 30 seconds.

10. Now, is that commute to your office, or is that
drive time "on the job"?

29. It's driving from home to a client, or from client back home.
I work from home when I'm not on the road.

4. In the greater LA area, the average tolerance seems to be 45 min.
Edited on Wed Dec-09-09 01:42 AM by Capn Sunshine
My (recently closed)restaurant was about 40 minutes away but if I work in Hollywood or the West Side it's 45.

14. My wife lived there a while
She described that it took about an hour and a half to get to work, and as much to get home. I have come as close as I come to making eternal vows to never live in LA. I suspect living there might mean dying there for me.

5. Let's see.
From the bedroom down a short hall to the office was my last job. I currently don't work.

Before that, I commuted 2-3 hours round trip.

I have never had so long a commute. I do not think I could stand it.

32. It was absolutely the best job I ever had.
I had an 'in' with the boss's wife at a company when it first started up. It started as a group of 8 and grew to >300 in a matter of 10 years or so.

The owner shared the wealth with his employees and we were extremely well compensated with salaries, bonuses, stock options, company events, etc. And we all worked our butts off.

He was a superb boss and many co-workers became good pals. So that and the money made it worth it. Now I can't imagine doing it. Driving home in blizzards at night were the worst.

Since the owner died, the place is in shambles. Less than 100 employees in the US now and all the manufacturing went to China. Ugh.

21. I used to have a nearly two hour commute into lower manhattan.
Up to an hour and a half on the train, and then 20 minutes on the subway. At least the train had a bar car in the evening!!

I could make my car a bar car! Yeah, if I wanted to throw my life away. (I have DUI nightmares, and I have never been behind the wheel drunk. What gives?)

13. Ouch
I don't think I could deal with the time or the car. I thought I might like a Yaris, but I literally had to bend my head to the side to sit inside the one on the dealership lot. No way could I do that amount of time in one without daily visits to a chiropractor.

on edit-- unless I work at home, of course. This morning I "commuted" from the bedroom to the office, via the kitchen.

22. Mine is about 800 miles
A couple hour flight, normally, but that doesn't count the drive to the airport, parking, getting to the terminal, checking in, waiting for a seat, etc., etc.

28. Is that to work, or is that at work, though?
If that is to work, what makes it worth doing? If you worked a standard 8 hour day, 2 hours to get there and two hours back means minimum 12 hours of your time gone. Thats an awefull big chunk of the day.

30. That's to/from work
I don't start actually working until I get there. Of course, I normally go to work for 4 days at a time, so it's not as bad as it seems at first glance.

I suppose I shouldn't have posted in this thread, as it was about "daily" commute.

My bad.

33. No worries
I still find it interesting. I kinda figured that was the case, as that would be a pretty extensive commute for a daily.

23. A little over an hour, but multimodal.
Ten minutes on foot, 35-40 minutes on a boat, more foot power, then 15 minutes on the bus. I'm not loving it much right now.

34. Kitchen, coffee, computer...
My wife's work is a bit further away, a little over a mile as the crow flies.

We used to be Los Angeles commuters, through some of the worst freeway congestion, but that was more than twenty years ago and never again if we can help it. The last three houses we've lived in were chosen in large part to minimize commuting.
