Poll question: How do you determine winter weather in your area?
Just north of Syracuse, we're at an odd nexus. Our storms may be local events, something sent down from Canada, something coming up the Ohio valley or something coming off the East Coast. We get both Alberta Clippers and Nor'easters. After having had kids in school from 1984 to last year, I am an expert at determining the track and intensity of any winter storm by listening to the recitation of schools that are on 2 hour delay, have closed, have canceled after-school activities or are closing early. I can tell if we are dealing with a local Lake storm, a general storm coming from the West or a storm coming up the East Coast.

4. At times, I can't see out my window and 1/2 mile to the south there
is clear blue weather. One time I drove 30 miles south to Syracuse for my second shift job. It was white knuckle driving the first few miles. I was on the 4 lane, inching forward trying to avoid hitting the car in front of me and keep out of the ditch. I was literally traveling slower than a walking pace and almost slipped into the median. Oddly enough, few people on my side of the road had any problems. The further South we got, the better the weather. It was the people going north who ended up off the road. They were driving into the bad weather and didn't slow down soon enough to keep out of trouble.

3. LOL, so true. Florida winter means socks and a sweatshirt!
As a former Bostonian, I never miss the snow and ice and dirty slush and constant raw, gray days.
