Applying to Jobs on Monster.com or Career Builders or Dice Is Like Playing the Scratch Off Lottery
You just know that you're not going to win, but you play anyway because you never know for sure. Well, at least I'll have a track record to show the UE office that I am applying to jobs.

1. it's depressing.
I've even caught myself checking my email addy to make sure that it's working like a girl waiting on a prom invite.

Unemployment sucks. I'm not even going to try staring next week thru the rest of the year. No one will be doing anything before New Years.

Back to your point, Monster, CB, Hotjobs..... all those suck and are horrible. The state's pages are even worse.

2. I Only Do Them For the Proof of a Job Search
The confirmation of resume submission emails serve as evidence. The only way to get a job is to get out there, meet people, interact with them, and make contacts. It's a much tougher and longer process, but it's the only way.

3. Here's a couple of other sites to try:
http://allstarjobs.com
http://www.indeed.com

The first one is just employment agencies, but it lets you search by city. I've gotten a few contacts with agencies that way. Still no interviews, but as you say, it all counts for the UI record :)

indeed.com also caches your searches for when you want to go back to certain ones :)

5. In This Economy, You're Wasting Time Going Through Job Boards and Recruiters
What you have to do is network directly with people, be active, volunteer for an organization, etc. People hire people that they know and those that they know of.

Making a name for yourself through volunteering and networking gets you known to the decision-makers.

6. Exactly
by the time most jobs are posted on those boards they have already 6 finalists for the position.

8. In my experience of getting positions in my line of work, Drafting,
headhunters and contractors is really the only way to get employed. Energy companies simply don't hire direct much anymore, or require you to go through a recruiter before the option of direct-hire even comes up.

10. That's Probably Because Recruiters Kick Back Money To The Hiring Managers
Even still, you should make it a practice to network in your field. Find out who has the real power in the companies that you work and get to know them on a personal level.

Trust me. I've known completely incompetent people get hired for fat paying jobs just because of their connections.

4. i recruited for thee years...
i hated using those sites. Craigslist and then career builder I thought were better...dice was good too for technical resumes. Monster sucked.

FYI...craigslist seemed to have better results when we would post jobs...and search resumes, believe it or not. My boss didn't believe me, until I got results for him. It can be hit or miss, but the job search from either side of the equation is not easy anyway. I also told him how I had found the reputable, private head hunter he hired to find me. lol

It's probably easy pick'ens right now for employers, but I'd had to be the one to slog through the resumes they are probably getting. That's what I used to do. I hated telling people no.

good luck with the job search :)

7. I had luck with them
I got a temp job in 2000 from Monster and multiple job interviews through Career Builder 2005-2006. The job that I am awaiting their decision after having 2 interviews was from the state public site as was the job that I have now.
I know networking has the best results and I wouldn't have to go through this competitive interview process, but I don't know anyone in my area that is in a position to hire me.
Good luck with your job search.
