Facebook's new privacy settings suck.
I used to have it set up so a few select people on my list could not see my status updates. I did this for personal reasons. They could post on my wall. They could see photo updates. They could see if I took those quizzes and what not. However, they just couldn't see any status update.

Well, FB changed its privacy settings and now those who I blocked from viewing my status updates can't even view my wall now. They can't post on it. The tab for WALL is just not there anymore. Which, ultimately, screams: HEY, I BLOCKED YOU FROM READING MY WALL! YAY FOR YOU!

And I don't want that.

Anyone know if I can fix this?

1. I've barely dipped into FB & Twitter and it's a mystery to me.
But then I really can't think of celebs I want to "follow." This morning I tried "Barbara WALTERS" just because she was on t.v. at that moment. The search turned up (hundreds?) of them, and I finally found her by her picture. But then what? All there is is a "BW allows only certain content to be seen" or somesuch.

How can you just browse (or LURK, iow)?!1

As for Twitter, I seen things (topics?) with a "#" or a "@" in front of them? What do these MEAN?!1 Why isn't there (or IS there) a humongous menu list of topics to pick from?!1

Any help will be sincerely appreciated!1

2. I have barely gotten into Twitter but..
I do know the "#" means topic and that "@" is for someone you want to direct a message at. The thing is for me, which is driving me bonkers, is that when I do a topic, for example #jpop, my tweets do not show up. All the major trends and I can't post in any of them. I have written to twitter about it, and apparently they are not interested.

So, I can post to my friends, but not to public trends. It sucks, but oh well.

4. also
To the right of your main page on twitter should be a list of "trends" These are topics you can check out.
I have tried and tried to post to them, but I seem to be blocked. Sucks, but oh well.

7. I just found out what ---------- ' ----------- means!1 It means "apostrophe"!1
I was totally puzzled to see "'" all over the place. It's supposed to be some kind of programming code (but isn't?) for: '

As in "I'm": I'm

Or, "you're": you're

Can somebody say why plain "I'm" or "you're" or whatever is NOT simpler?!1

12. nobody types "&apos"
It's the result of a poorly coded web site... The browser is displaying "&apos" instead of an actual apostrophe.

So the entire Twitter is "poorly coded"?

I've finally found the "Blog" section that has some info for beginners, but there's still not enough spelling out for my (poor) level. How about steering us towards a quick-start site? Thanks for any consideration to this!1

11. Your tweets are either private or public...
If you want to contribute to an open conversation about #topic, then you must not set your tweets as private.

31. my Twitter is very public
it's where I post my political rants--- of my followers I only know about 5 of them either online or in person. My Facebook is more for my personal updates (and I bite my tongue and avoid politics).

If you want to follow me on twitter I'm @tabbycat331

21. Since I'm guessing you're a political junkie, you have to follow
Claire McCaskill. http://twitter.com/clairecmc She does awesome tweets! they're all her, too, no ghost tweeting.

8. Have you tried clicking on that little lock button under your status?
I haven't, so this might be useless advice, but one of the options is "customize" - I don't know if that's per status or for all statuses...

9. Ok, I checked...
You can do show to "only these people" (insert list) or hide from "only these people" (insert list). So that's a pain, but you can still do it.

13. I figured it out.
It was very tricky.

Because my original settings had me blocking it in the privacy settings, it was blocking out people entirely. I unchecked that from customized to friends only and then manually locked a status update so that all but one person could see it and they were able to access my wall.

Unfortunately, it appears I have to do this every damn time. :/

Thanks, though.

20. Try this...
Scroll over the settings link atop the main page. It'll show a drop down menu. Click Privacy Settings. On that page, click on Profile Information. On that page, find Posts by Me
Default setting for Status Updates, Links, Notes, Photos, and Videos you post
. There, you can change it.

24. Because it's an easy way to keep in touch with a lot of people, in snippets.
I have real-life friends from many places and aspects of my life, I have online friends in the same way. I can collect my family, my high school friends, college friends, co-op friends, Germany friends, music-playing friends, moms'-group friends, DU friends, and random people I meet, and have an easy way to keep in touch with all of them at a moment's notice. I can share pictures and thoughts and memories and laughs, and I can interweave my social network more by those people interacting with each other on my profile.

:P

like my husband's surgery this past summer.

Also, I can post pics of my kids for friends to see without having to email them to everyone.

30. The new settings do not fix the three major Facebook policy changes...
Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 06:49 PM by targetpractice
I do not want everyone to be able to see my profile picture, friends list and especially what things I am a fan of... The privacy settings no longer allow the user to control who sees these three things... As of now, any Facebook user can see these things about me.

By suddenly making this information open, Facebook has invaded the privacy of millions of users.

I wonder if they do any actual user testing at all.
