The Soft Machine. Does anyone remember?
**Had the album.....Have the CD*
I'll be amazed if anyone knows or remembers this band...

Save Yourself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu7GFZ8uOX8
It's my, my bed you're lying on
It's my, my bed you're dying on
But if it's my head you're relying on

You gotta save yourself
Don't enslave yourself
Just to save yourself
Stay in your own bed at night

Because, girl, you know that if
I try to feed you and keep you all weak to make you feel secure
Then you won't leave my bed, though you wanna stay fed
Will your heart remain, girl?
You know you can't make it
Without tryin' to fake it
And I believe, baby

You gotta save yourself
Don't enslave yourself
Just to save yourself
Stay in your own bed at night

Why Are We Sleeping?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwc_gosvQ_A
It begins with a blessing, it ends with a curse
Making life easy by making it worse
"My mask is my master", the trumpeter weeps
But his voice is so weak, as he speaks from his sleep

Saying: "Why, why, why... Why are we sleeping?"

People are watching, people who stare
Waiting for something that's already there
"Tomorrow I'll find it", the trumpeter screams
And remembers he's hungry, and drowns in his dreams

Saying: "Why, why, why... Why are we sleeping?"

My head is a nightclub with glasses and wine
The customers dancing or just making time
While Daevid is cursing, the customers scream
Now everyone's shouting, "Get out of my dream!"

Saying: "Why, why, why... Why are we sleeping?"

peace~

1. Hi super D!!!!
I remember them....and being all confused by things. There was novel by the same name, right? And the Grateful Dead sing "Dallas, got a soft machine" in Truckin'.

Do you know the whole story, who was first, etc?

Great to see you. You are always a spirit lifter.

:hi:

5. darkstar!!
:hi:

This is a nice surprise...William Burroughs wrote The Soft Machine in the early 60's...before the band.
Fascinating bio.....And that's all I know. I don't recall being confused by the music as I was already a tad confused;)

You, dear one, are the spirit lifter!
I sometimes must revisit....one of my finest nights on DU!

Always nice to see you also...Hope all is well.

6. Hahahahaha! If anything's wrong w/ that...I don't wanna be right
I meant I was confused about why I heard the phrase way back then when I was 12 or so, i.e. 1970.

Rock on sister. Keep smiling!!

2. Of course
All their albums were titled with number related themes (Third, Vol.4, etc).

When Syd Barrett "left" Pink Floyd Soft Machine worked with him on his album The Madcap Laughs.

All Soft Machine albums have been released on CD - I've got most them on the shelves here somewhere...

7. A true lover of their music....
:hi:
Thank you!...I didn't know they went on. I bought the first one....and never explored. At the time that's all I needed. I'll have to check into some of their later music....
After reading....I just did some research to find all that I had missed....
Nice to know that I can go back to the past and into the future past...
I've been listening to this CD a lot as of late...
They were so obscure...or so I thought.... I really am surprised.

peace~

17.  There were a bunch of similar bands floating around in the late 60's/early 70's
Mostly all English - Nucleus, Caravan, Hatfield and the North, etc. The Nice (pre-ELP) are probably the most remembered.

There is also a band called Matching Mole that was formed after Soft Machine split up.

18. I missed a lot...
I spent my time in a small rural town....riding around in a VW beetle....
All we had were 8 tracks...
Spent too much time watching ants building their hills...

Never heard of any of them...except for Matching Mole...and that only rings a faint bell...
I'll have to check out The Nice...love ELP...
You've got the music in you...thank you.

21. The Nice is where Emerson "learned" to lay the piano on top of himself
Ah, what constituted art back then, eh?? :)

8 tracks? Had one mounted on the transmission tunnel of the '62 Chevy - oh the joys of hearing Quicksilver and Fleetwood Mac tracks with 25 second gaps in the songs...

Very intense ....Thank you..

I don't know what year it was...but I had a maroon Rambler! That was in '69...and it was quite ugly and old.
My life is flashing before me....Thanks for the memories...and new old music.:-)
I'm getting YouTubed out tonight...

25. That was actually a Hammond L-100 spinet organ
that he would play backwards with it lying on his chest, crash the reverb springs, turn on and off to make the tone generator speed go all over the place, stab with knives, set on fire... :D I don't think he ever tried that with his big Hammond C-3 console, though...they're heavier overall and top-heavy (same as a B-3 but in a churchier cabinet.)

Emo was going to do a US tour awhile back (that sadly got cancelled)...his organ tech was soliciting cheap/free L-100's for him to mangle on stage. I flirted with the idea of offering him mine, but couldn't bring myself to do it knowing what fate would befall the poor thing. ;)

27. That's so funny I was just thinking yesterday what it would have been like if Emerson had...
attempted all that with a big ass C-3 or B-3.
"Oww...my back!"
"Fuck, I think I broke my toe!"

26. and Camel!
Camel's original key man Peter Bardens was really tasty, and VdGG's Hugh Banton is a really unique organ player. I get a lot out of those guys. I love Peter Hammill's writing. Camel's guitarist Andy Latimer is criminally-underrated as a player...

4. Funny, I liked the lyrics to "Save Yourself" but
if I'd just heard the song, I wouldn't have gotten as much out of it, and might have missed the point entirely. But that's probably just me.

8. No...not just you....
:hi:
I'm the same...the music and the lyrics are as one....yet I need to know the exact lyrics to appreciate.
These lyrics are simple...yet deep. I submerge myself in them when I can relate.
I'm glad you liked it!

12. Hope for Happiness
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uMtwb06fpc

I can tell... like the ring of a bell
A chime that is clear and true
But if a crack, the sound is flat
Like happiness... become untrue
Out of the East, the sun flew West
Trailing its golden spray
My heart burns, when fortune turns
The trail to light my way

Days go by, I watch the sky
My eyes forever quest.
The sun returns, though my hope yearns
Forever things point the rest

Sun heart burns, moon glow turns
Stars foretell - Hope For Happiness
Hope For Happiness, happiness, happiness

Flowers grow wild, just for the child
Many hued their bloom
When you grow up, hope colours up
Things that cause us gloom
Tell can you now how fun is made?
It's how happiness is really found
Look for advice, be told more than twice
By people all around

Sun heart burns, moon glow turns
Stars foretell: Hope For Happiness
Hope For Happiness, happiness, happiness

peace~

14. Lullaby Letter
Lullaby Letter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtBpLeVT5J4
I've got something to tell you
Hold on, I wanted to thrill you
It's nice, makes you feel better
It's called the Lullaby Letter
Hold tight, I'm not trying to con you
Get ready, I'm going to lay it on you

You're the sweetest thing I see
I'm telling you it's no lie

I've got lights in my brain, girl
We'll have fights in the rain, girl
You'll be good and bad together
Writing songs and call that the weather
If you've got something to sing me
4 o'clock's the best time to ring me

You're the strangest scene I see
I'm telling you it's no lie
You're the sweetest thing I've seen
In my life...

Hold tight, I'm not trying to con you
I'm telling you it's no lie

peace~
