Jewelry may be stupid, but fur is more stupid.
I was reading the jewelry is stupid post when a girlfriend (more like my daughter's friend's mom) of mine called to tell me her husband had bought her a mink coat for Christmas.

Jewelry might be stupid, but fur is far more stupid. I don't think I would even associate with someone who would were a mink coat out in public. Not only is it a waste of money, but now I have to explain to my daughter how they make fur coats out of her pet chinchillas.

1. I totally agree. And avoid anything with "raccoon fur" on it that's made in China.
Actually, avoid ANY fur on a garment made in China. They have a breed of dog called a raccoon dog (because of the fur pattern). GUESS WHAT THEY USE! J.C. Penney got caught because of that and pulled all of the items off of the racks. But the bean counters run the place so they had the employees use a permanent marker to cross out "raccoon" and put the things back on the racks. Sleeze. I won't shop there again.

2. That's disgusting.
I won't buy fur period. I don't see why an animal needs to die, so that I can show everyone I can afford to wear their skin.

16. I'm thinking of getting my daughter a hamster for Xmas.
Am I nuts?

She's been asking me for many months, and she's almost ten, and I think she'd be a good caretaker.

We take pet care VERY seriously, so the little critter would have a good life, as far as a hamster life goes.

4. Yes, and there is no art form to fur. There is art to the greater world of fashion
but not particularly to fur. Jewelry however is an art form.

7. Even before I became a vegetarian, I didn't care for fur.
Besides the cruelty, I don't even find fur attractive on humans.

8. My cats beg to differ.
They love their fur coats. I am with you , however. I don't understand the attraction to it, especially now that fake furs have gotten so realistic looking.

11. I love jewelry but fur is better worn on it's original owner.
I don't believe that anyone has died for my gold and silver pieces of jewelry but I'm sure someone will chime in to tell me they have.

15. If your gold and silver contain diamonds, someone did
Look into the atrocities committed by De Beers and the other diamond merchants. The metals themselves are no environmental prize either; gold is generally extracted from ore with cyanide, and there's not really such a thing as "silver ore"--silver comes in ore that contains other metals, one of the more common ones being lead. (My mother grew up in Idaho's Silver Valley. She tells us of a little stream in Kellogg everyone called "Lead Creek." It took quite a while for people to realize Lead Creek wasn't a "creek" at all, but rather the Coeur d'Alene River--one of the most important streams in North Idaho.)

13. My mom tells me all the time
that she's leaving me her mink coat in her will. I don't yet have the courage to tell her that I will never, under any circumstances, including the one where all clothing in the world vaporizes (well, it could happen), wear the hideous thing. I guess I can let the cats use it for bedding.

17. You could send it to "Coats for Cubs" when you inherit it:
http://www.hsus.org/furfree/campaigns/c4c/

The Humane Society has a great program where they accept real furs coats, stoles, collars, etc., and use them for wildlife rehabilitation. It really calms baby animals who don't have a mama.

I sent in a fur stole that my mother in law gave my daughter for "dress up."

14. I disagree, fur keeps you warm.
Thus, unlike jewelry, it has a purpose.
