Have you ever been told you're arrogant -- by a friend? |
|
Have you ever been advised by a good friend, someone you've known for a long time, for instance, that you're arrogant? If yes, what did you think about that? What did you do? Did you discuss it? (or run away from it?) Did you work on changing anything? Did your relationship with that friend change after the comment?
The reason I ask: I have a friend who is clearly arrogant - along with other disturbing (to me) qualities. We've been friends a long time but his behavior is really getting to me. I've been patient and forgiving, keeping my annoyance and criticisms(?) to myself for fear of a defensive backlash on his part (dysfunctional conflict and all that). But I've reached a point where I can't stomach much more.
I've been reading a book on narcissism, and reached an alarming statement that advised not to try to tell a person they're a narcissist, because they wouldn't be able to accept and acknowledge it -- you would totally hit a wall because they can't see it. Not a clue.
So, taking just one piece of that syndrome of behaviors, if you've ever been called arrogant, how did you react? (I'm looking for people to whom this has actually happened - if you're willing to admit it.) On the flip side, I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone who has been in a similar scenario of delivering said "criticism."

2. My best friend said that to me, not in so many words, in a series of e-mails totaling 10 pages of |

detailed criticism of me, my attitude and behavior. I thought 95% of her critique was total bullshit, though I apologized for some things I did that I really did feel bad about. To make a long story short I stopped talking to her for a year and a half. At that point I was back in town for a visit near where she lived, and called her. After spending about six hours together as if nothing had changed, that was that. I chalked it all up to that having been a bad phase in both our lives and getting to the point where I no longer felt like she meant what she said in 2007. Now everything is back to normal :)

I don't mean to sound arrogant, it's just when something seems self-evident to me it mystifies me how people can believe differently. Drives me nuts. :banghead:
I guess that's an Asperger's thing...
