This is really big, she will make a great mayor.

She is also a democrat, we have a history of electing democrats for mayor.

She carried my precinct in both elections big time.

We gave her 186 votes.

This is why I work elections.

Annise has been working for the city for a long time, been elected for two other city jobs.

Houston did it.

1. You know, that kind of surprised me

Even if Houston is one of the more liberal areas of Texas, the state still strikes me as the center of the conservative universe. Parker's election was not only good for Texas, I think it was good for the country.

2. I knew she would win.
We did have low voter turnout so every vote counted.

This election was good for the country and the state of Texas.

Our cities are very blue.

12. The cities are liberal, the wealthy burbs and the rural parts are conservative.
Pretty simple.

Because Texas is so big, you have large areas of no civilization and little towns.

I personally have to drive 80 miles to shop at a Target store, for example. I have to drive 150 miles to go to Costco.

Towns with more oil company influence are also more conservative. John Gunther observed in his book "Inside U.S.A." that Tulsa and Houston were the two most backwards cities he had visited in the U.S., due to the dominance of the oil industry in the local economy.

Dallas has always been more conservative than Houston, but it is changing. They elected a Black D.A. in Dallas who has reopened cases and gotten old evidence tested for DNA, which is why convicts are being exonerated and released.

I hope Former Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade (he of Roe v. Wade fame) is red lining the marble tachometer!!!

3. I am glad she won.
I don't know what it is about the black churches that makes them so homophobic. And the guy running against her was a leader in the NAACP at one time. How does he reconcile the hate and bigotry against gays? It's still hate against another group. I don't get it.

5. I know.
I think this is what cost him some votes, or brought out mores voters for Annise.

7. I'm very happy too!
She is very sharp and has always impressed me. I've voted for her every time she's run for a city office since the late 90s. She'll make a great mayor!

8. I have met her a few times, got to shake her hand at early voting.
She has served Houston well in her other city offices she has held.

The BBC carried this story, this is worldwide.

10. That's awesome texanwitch. As an almost Houstonite,
my mom was born and raised there but move to CA a couple years before I was born, it's very encouraging to see that level of progressive attitude. I wish her and your city the best as she begins her administration.

13. This is a wonderful thing, but the sooner we start calling her Mayor Parker, and not Mayor Annise
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 03:29 AM by Heidi
Parker, the better. Every time I see the first two words, "Mayor Annise," I automatically read "Mayonnaise." :(

14. Lol!
I'll have to remember that one :D
Although, when I see it in print, I just think of the spice ;)

Still, it's a helluva lot better than old "MayorBob", the appropriate nickname for Mayor Bob Lanier, good ol' boy supreme, and head of one of the crookedest administrations we'd seen in a very long time...

16. Mayor Bob was so much a crook.
I think Locke would have been in Lanier's pocket from what I have read.

18. I didn't know that about Locke, so it's a good thing I didn't vote for him,
either time. Parker got both of my votes! :D

19. Known as "Concrete Bob".
When he was the head of METRO he managed to get a billion dollars out of Washington to improve the freeways.
