Poll question: Self-deprecating sense of humor |
|
What do you think a self-deprecating sense of humor says about someone? I goof on myself just about as much as I do anything else. I've found that some people think it's strange and don't understand how someone can talk negatively about himself, even in fun. They don't think it's funny. Others take it as a sign of humility and laugh along with me. Still others think I'm a dumbass. Others yet have no opinion and apparently no pulse.

4. I approve! As long as it doesn't happen every day. |

There's a thin line between "self-deprecation" and "self-flagellation".
Oh, and it definitely HAS to be FUNNY to qualify.

It shows that you don't take yourself too seriously and can laugh at yourself. I trust people like you way, way more than those w/ no self-awareness or those w/o a sense of humor about themselves.

8. That would do you well if you ever go to England. |
|
Self-deprecating humor is de rigeur there. The rule is that you can be serious, but you must never take yourself seriously. We Americans might be happier if we adopted that mentality.

I've yet to meet an asshole who employs self-deprecating humor. They're incapable of it.

13. Unless it's about poop, dicks, boobs, or sex, I don't think it's funny. |
|
So unless you are deprecating yourself about one of those, shut your trap!
