Ugh... Is there anything lamer than former atheists that turn into fundies? |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-16-09 06:16 PM by LostInAnomie
My best friend since high school used to be an adamant atheist (like myself). We were the only other atheists that we knew in the area and we used to laugh at all the fundies in our community. A few years ago though, he had a health scare and went searching for something to give him comfort in the face of potential oblivion. What he found was a Evangelical church and he has been annoying as shit ever since.
It seems like I can't have a conversation with him without the phrase "Well, since I'm a Christian..." or "As a child of Christ..." getting thrown around at least a few times. It's fucking pathetic.
His facebook updates are the worst. He's always thanking God for some bullshit or asking for prayers. I'm on the verge of cutting him off.

a "child of Christ" would also be known as a "bastard". :P

I just usually tell him to stop with all the "I love Jesus" bullshit.

3. They say the empty can rattles the most. |
|
He's probably very insecure about his beliefs, hence the need to blather on about them all the time.

4. New converts are usually anything but insecure about their beliefs |
|
So it's probably that end of the spectrum instead.

22. Incorrect. They are often the most insecure, and are loudmouthed to cover it up. |
|
Hence the phrase "the empty can rattles the most". The one who is gassing on and on about their belief system is probably feeling the most insecure about it.
Case in point: all those politicians who talk about family values and the sanctity of marriage while they're cheating with hookers, men in airports, interns, campaign workers, etc.

6. Well, what's most annoying about it... |
|
... is that when he was an atheist he always used to say "religion is a crutch for the weak and scared". Then, he has his health scare and he falls into the same trap that he had been decrying for years. I've pointed that out to him and he says goes on and on about "When you know the love a Christ you know that isn't true".

5. Adamant Aetheists can be pretty annoying too |
|
The ones I know are consumed by their belief that no one should believe. It colors their entire lives.
Just substitute "faith" with "logic" and it's the same rap. The only thing missing is them knocking on my door in the morning to share the news that there is no God.
no offense meant,LIA because you've always been nothing but cool.
No zealot like a convert, asthey say.

Whether it's a former atheist born-again Christian or a former fundamentalist turned rabid atheist... the compulsion to proselytize their point of view and judge all those who fail to conform is the same.

Tried religion - believe me I did - but after seeing the Talibornagain up close and personal I decided religion wasn't for me. Seriously every group meeting I attended was like the Space Monkey scene from Fight Club.

...that I've ever known personally are lapsed Catholics. Absolutists by training.
So I guess it makes sense that when they go Fundy they're the worst types?
Oh I should add that most were probably Randroids first.

11. I used to have a fundie friend |
|
Every time she fell off the wagon, she'd go get born again. Like all born-agains, she suffered brain damage during the rebirth. She got so annoying, I finally cut her off, although her marrying an asshole who liked to collect Nazi memorabilia also had some influence on the decision to dump her.

They waddle around saying "The Lord The Lord The Lord" constantly.
Had a friend of mine change like that. I haven't seen or talked to him in over 20 years.
And he once was a great guy to be around, laughing, joking.

Converts to anything are thrilled with their discovery and think everyone should know about it. I was like that when I first became an atheist. Some of it was just me trying to understand my new awareness.
If he's a friend, bear with him. The more you bring it up, the more you'll egg him on. Maybe he needs this. Maybe this is real for him, filling a hole he didn't know he had, or some such. The only way I've ever found to stay friends with someone is to respect the part of them I hate.

21. I knew one of those rabid converts. |
|
He was a real party guy in grad school -- lots of booze and carousing. But a few years after graduation he became a Jehovah's Witness and was a total pain in the ass about it. I liked him a lot better when he was a lecherous drunk.
