5. I read recently that he played the "blowtorch" solo only in final performance, not in rehearsal...
...so that the minds onstage were being blown as well as the minds in the audience.

I agree with you...I'd have to say that the single greatest desire of any true musician is to have their music played, and when it is played with fire and passion and skill, that's the top of the mountain.

That song was a defining moment for Beatle George...I know many consider it to be THE single greatest track on The White Album.

Todd Rundgren delivered a pretty solid version of it on "Songs From The Material World: A Tribute To George Harrison" (http://www.amazon.com/Songs-Material-World-Tribute-Harrison/dp/B000087DTV/), but Prince is the one who took it through the roof.

7. I've heard that back when Prince was still doing small clubs
all the metalhead kids would come to his show, even though they didn't really like his style of music, just to hear him play the guitar.

He really is amazingly talented.

8. Yes, I've heard fans and detractors when it came to the songs...
...but I've never read a single negative comment about his guitar playing. It's the Frank Zappa "Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar" syndrome...artists basically want to do what they want to do, and sometimes they are in alignment with the fans' expectations, and sometimes they're not. Artists like Zappa, Neil Young, Lou Reed, David Bowie...and Prince...do what they want, when they want, and the joke's on anyone who's not willing to go along for the ride.

Sometimes Prince wants to wail on the guitar, other times he wants to sing a song about having sex with his sister. It's all Prince, for better or worse.

9. I saw Prince eons ago opening for the Stones in LA
He was literally boo-ed off the stage by the hard-core rockers up front. It was kind of sad. Obviously giving his all, and treated that way.

14. Keith couldn't stand him
Prince--"To me, Prince is like the Monkees. . . . I think he's very clever at manipulating the music business and the entertainment business. I think he's more into that than making music. I don't see much substance in anything he does . . . a Pee-wee Herman trip."

10. Nicely structured trading between Petty and Lynne on the lead vocals.
Was that Knopfler who played the fills and first solo?

Interesting choice of a Tele by Prince, instead of one of his "symbol" guitars. It sounded fucking great.

Dhani is pretty close to my age, and it cracks me up that he's pretty blase about playing onstage with his dad's old rockstar buddies, but playing with Prince - now that's something to get excited about.

I always love to hear Prince wail in the guitar. I love the sound of that Tele. He's got those weird shaped guitars for show and stuff, but it seems any time he's got his Tele it means he's about to get serious about some guitar playin' ;)

17. Dude is and always was a kick-ass guitarist.
What was that song from Purple Rain? Let's Get Crazy? Let's Go Crazy? Something like that.

I thought when I heard that song that he was making a statement that he'd arrived on the scene as a guitar virtuoso. Turns out it was the last I heard of him (guitar-wise)...until I clicked the link in the OP.

I know every artist gets to decide what they want to do and how they want to do it, but I still think all us headbangers missed out on something special when Prince decided not to become a metal god.

22. Try to get ahold of some of his live bootlegs
Especially from the Prince & the Revolution era. Lots of great stuff there. But I agree - I wish there was a lot more guitar on his albums.

and yeah, you're probably thinking of Let's Go Crazy, though there is some pretty flashy stuff elsewhere in Purple Rain as well.

19. It's good, but not "greatest guitar solo ever"
Like the video advertises.

I mean, he's no Paul Gilbert.

Gilbert playing (suitably) subdued throughout a night of Beatles covers with band mates Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse, and Matt Bissonette finally cuts loose on While My Guitar Gently Weeps in an epic guitar extravaganzo that pays tribute in this mind-boggling version to Clapton, Hendrix, and Van Halen while blazing away in his own unique style.

It's not to everyone's taste, but the playing is from the heart and really pumps my nads!

I'd rather listen to Holdsworth.

You had to pull the Holdsworth card.

I've got a solo by an unknown xylophone player that is pretty damn neat if you'd like to hear it sometime.

(I'll put it on my website) :)

31. He didn't nail shit!
This song is pentatonic patterns. Where's the Holdsworth version of this song?

Nobody wants to hear xylophone players, and damn near as many don't want to hear Holdsworth.

This song is ROCK AND ROLL, not some goddamn jazz-fusion.

Exercise book. Feh.

32. Well...for your info...Rock and Roll doesn't have to be Corny and playing...
...the same ol' patterns is corny.
Hell..anybody can learn that.

You know who people like Duane allman, Dickey Betts and other good R&R players listen to ?? Jazz players.

You can learn to play Rock and Roll but you can't learn to play Rock and roll great by listening to Rock and Roll.

Playing the same old patterns is what Prince did.

Playing the same old patterns is what every other guitarist did.

Playing the same old patterns-mach 2-is what Gilbert did.

Who gives a shit about Duane Allman, or Dickey Betts?

They're forty years ago, man.
