I may soon be the oldest apprentice evarh!! |
|
I've been pretty much a sales dog the past couple of decades, with a little bit of mad money from jewelry making on the side. Since the economic downturn, and our retirement plans regarding sailing the ocean blue, I've wanted to get some practical work experience with sailboat maintenance.
We will have an adequate though minimal "cruising budget" and I was trying to figure out what skill set will help supplement our income during our travels. One of the big four cruiser needs is someone to repair sails and do canvas work. This doesn't require lugging around as much heavy equipment as diesel or refrigeration repair, and has nearly as much demand as a ships carpenter.
Today I checked out a local sail repair loft and spoke with the owner. After the holidays she is willing to take me on as an unpaid apprentice for a few weeks, maybe turning in to a paid position learning sail repair and boat canvas work.
So early next month I will start as a loft assistant, and if I am deemed trainable I will start learning a new craft, sail repair. :woohoo:

I think you're already oversubscribed...
But anyway...Congrats!
I hope it turns out to be very profitable and fun for you!
