My daughter is in New Orleans right now visiting UNO hoping to transfer there
next year. She is studying archeology. She just called and said, "I don't care if they accept me or not, I am moving here, I f**king LOVE this city!" So to all those of you living there THANK YOU for making her and friend feel so welcome!:yourock:

1. UNO is an awesome school
It's not for everybody, though. If you want the classic college experience, it's not going work out. If you want an interesting, non-traditional student body and faculty who know how to blend scholarship with real-world perspective, it's a fantastic place.

(Disclosure: I earned my BA from UNO)

2. Archaeology is actually performed in New Orleans!
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 05:43 PM by KamaAina
yeah, it's that old (founded 1718). I remember reading about a dig just a year or two ago right on the grounds of St. Louis Cathedral (the one in the postcard shot of Jackson Square with the equestrian statue in front of it and the buildings with "iron lace" balconies on either side).

4. The Earl Long Library
That's the sort of thing I love about New Orleans. The city's largest public university doesn't name the library after a dead academic or a rich donor; they name it after a politician best known for having an affair with a stripper and spending time in a mental hospital (and being portrayed by Paul Newman in the movie "Blaze")!

5. Well, that's how they roll down here.
Huey Long said of Earl: "Earl is my brother but he's crooked. If you live long enough he'll double cross you. He'd double cross Jesus Christ if He was down here on earth." (Quoted in Richard D. White, Jr., Kingfish, Random House, p. 137)

7. it may seem odd to you but he prob. thought he was best known for being a governor & populist
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 08:53 PM by pitohui
somehow i don't think gov long thought he was best known for being in a paul newman movie about a stripper, i'm pretty sure all politicians of that era (of any era) have "loose" girlfriends

everybody in every state names stuff after politicians, i have to admit in all these years and beers i've had many criticisms of uno, but calling a library after a former gov. is not the first criticism that ever sprung to my mind as anything odd

maybe i've just lived here too long...

10. Actually, I'm a UNO alum, so I know the story behind this
Earl Long was the first Louisiana politician of any stature who stood up to the Tulane crowd and fought for a public university in New Orleans. For years, the Tulane grads dominated the NOLA political and business elite had vehemently opposed a low-cost LSU campus in the city and had used their pull to kill any attempt to make one a reality. Earl managed to cut the deals with the Navy, Levee Board, and god knows who else and got UNO up and running in the 1950s.

6. i attended uno and a warning, a female who doesn't put out wont go far in some depts
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 08:49 PM by pitohui
i dont know the archeology dept but if i had it to do over again i have gone anywhere but here, its rep is not really a secret either so i dunno, maybe this is all pre-k stuff and the bad guys have swum away but i wouldn't count on it, sexual harassment was institutionalized

and a terrible school if you want the new orleans experience, tulane or loyola are much better located for that -- it's more of a commuter college

the neighborhood where i lived was largely destroyed in katrina, (in fact, the folks i lived with in college were killed) and i'm not sure what the housing situation is now in that area

at the end of the day, you can like/live in new orleans without attending uno, it has some specialities, such as restaurant and tourism but archeology...i dunno...you should always choose a college based on your major/dept./specialty not on where "it might be a nice guy to drink beer with"

just telling you the downside, i gradulated cum laude but because of the sexual harassment etc. my college education really turned out to be totally not worth it -- new orleans is v. much abt "who your mama is"...it's who you know and who you blow, if you know what i mean

i would say, if at all possible, talk to former FEMALE graduates of YOUR dept and find out what they have to say over a few glasses of wine abt their experiences, and if you find out that most of the FEMALE graduates are unable to work in their field, that should quietly tell you something right there...

9. You make a good point regarding Tulane
not only does the streetcar stop at its doorstep, one of the things it does well is Mesoamerican studies. So if she's interested in that part of the world, that could work.
