These things look like a monk's outfit:

Holiday Shopping Notebook: Snuggie heats up

(AP) – 4 hours ago

CHICAGO — It's a blanket. It has sleeves. And it's becoming a stalwart on gift lists everywhere.

The "as seen on TV" Snuggie and a competitor known as The Slanket are flying off shelves nationwide. So too are the knockoffs showing up in stores across the country.

"It's a super-popular item," Tom Aiello, a spokesman for Sears and Kmart, said of the Snuggie.

Last year the cult-fostering cozies, which look suspiciously like a monk's ensemble in fleece, rose to fame as the ultimate kitsch gift. But they were available only online or through TV commercials.

5. I'm willing to go on record as a total dork
I asked for one for Christmas. I have arthritis in my shoulders and they hurt when they're cold. I thought I'd try this for reading in bed - keep my shoulders covered (i.e. - warm) but be able to manipulate the pages of a book. If it doesn't work, I think someone's only out about $15...

13. I actually recommended to my sister to buy one for my Mom,
as a Christmas present idea. My Mom is 91 and is constantly cold, even though we live in San Diego. It will be perfect for her. She's getting the leopard print one. If we lived in a cold climate I might even use one in the winter. Sometimes comfort trumps appearance. I've seen them in many stores including Costco and Walgreens.

19. My Mom got one. A real rip off. It's not a robe,it's a fleece hospital gown with sleeves.
And cheap, thin fleece at that.I thought it might have been a good idea for her because she's cold natured as well(she's 84). Sleeves fit for an orangutan, and it's definitely for lounging on the couch or in bed because she couldn't walk in it without tripping on the hem.Great feature for a woman who suffered a broken hip last year. And if you could manage to be ambulatory in it,it's literally a fire hazard.

It's become a real cult item and no doubt the owners are laughing all the way to the bank but as a functional garment it's a POS.A warm pair of jammies or dragging a blanket around the house is a better way to go.

I got her money back for this farce the next day.

30. Ok thanks
My Mom rarely walks any more, mostly she uses a wheelchair. I'm always putting a blanket over her and then she can't do anything because her hands are covered. The Snuggie seems like a solution for her needs, so we'll just have to wait and see if it works for her or not.

18. I have something similar called a Slanket.
It's the same thing, but with a pocket for your feet so they don't get cold, and a pocket across your stomach to put your hands in.

Very warm. I use it a lot, and the dogs and cats love cuddling on it and in it. :)

33. Hi Inchworm!
:hi:

I haven't been able to leave the house in a while. I'm thinking I have to abandon this new med I was trying. The side effects are a bit too severe. But for the most part I'm managing pretty well and doing okay. :)

I hope you are doing well.

20. They have them at our Krogers store.
The only reason I can think of me wearing one is if I had another health set back and was really sick. Right now my medications give me hot flashes so I don't want to be caught up in anything that would make me warmer. :nuke:

22. The reviews on Amazon are hilarious.
The consensus seems to be:

1.) Buy a slanket not a snuggie. Snuggies are cheap as-sold-on-TV knock-offs that will pill the second you wash them.

2.) The slit in the back is a pain but if you wear the slanket backwards, it's more comfortable. (er... then why not just wear a robe?)

3.) The size of the sleeves is too large and lets cold air in, but if you sew elastic into the sleeves, it's warmer. (er... why not just put on a sweatshirt?)

There's dozens of comments about how to modify your slanket so that it's roughly as functional as a robe or a sweater and almost no comments telling people to just put on a damn sweater and save their money.

27. Do they make a Cubs snuggie?
I would wear one of those. However, I would refuse to wear the snuggie bag of shame to wear over one's head that would probably come with it.

I would also wear the leopard print snuggie. Other than that, I prefer a sweater/sweats and a lap blanket, or my robe.
