Of course we're all going to die, silly!

But I doubt that you will die in this snowstorm...

20. Some people will.
With the crazy drivers in the Northeast. And the people who will snowboard, snowmobile, go ice skating on lakes, and, of course, those who will have heart attacks from shoveling.

5. The DC area is supposed to get 10 - 20 inches
Woohoo. Last time we got this much the kids were out of school for a whole long noisy cold week. Then again, last time I had 5 kids in the house, now there's only one, so I'm expecting lots of naps and popcorn.

stuff to read, food, drink, cat food and litter, DVDs . . . Yep, it is great time with the kids, much easier with one though, and I don't even have to shovel anymore!:)

Hope you can stay happy and warm too!

watch the 49ers in the snow.

I love the snow, can't wait for it to start.

My area of Berks County may get nearly a foot.

28. For those of us who live in the north, like here in WI, in the winter it snows.
Sometimes it snows a lot. Here in WI it snows and then usually after that the temps plunge to below zero. Such is life. No big deal here. (10 days ago we got 17" from a storm here in western WI.)

It just really irks me when these forecasters are all doom and gloom when snow is coming....MONSTER STORM...KILLER STORM...STORM OF THE CENTURY!@!!@@!! ELEVENS!!!!@@@@@ I'm beginning to think they get a kick out of scaring people. I don't mind the snow at all...I love it

Those forecasters should STFU

31. I agree.
We always get a big laugh up here at what ties up your traffic and closes schools down there. Valdez gets this kind of snow every winter and they haven't closed school in over 30 years except for wind.

I do understand, though, that we're a bit more prepared for it in Alaska. :)

32. Keep in mind...
That there is probably more snow removal equipment at the Anchorage airport than there is in the entire state of Virginia.
There is probably more snow removal equipment at Anchorage, Fairbanks and O'Hare airports together than there is in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware combined.

I had friends that owned a place in the west end of the UP of Michigan. While they never (to my recollection) got 6 feet in three days, 24 inches overnight was not at all uncommon (and I was visiting them one winter when that happened), so I can relate just a little to what you experience.

2 feet is a big deal when a typical heavy snowfall is 6 inches or less.

33. Indeed,
which is why I don't understand why those mid-Atlantic states/cities don't invest in a snowplow or two for just these occasions. It seems like these snowstorms come up periodically, and as a matter of public safety, these states should be prepared to take care of their citizens.

34. They don't invest in that equipment because it's represents an expense
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 02:32 PM by A HERETIC I AM
that is hard to justify if it is used once every 4 or 5 years.

Remember last winter ( I think it was last year, but certainly within the last couple) that Georgia and specifically Atlanta got hit with a serious ice storm? It paralyzed the city for several days. If the same storm took place in Illinois or Michigan or Wisconsin or Pennsylvania, the roads would have been salted within 12 hours and life would have continued. If these sorts of things happened regularly in Georgia, they would purchase the trucks and equipment, but since it doesn't, there is no point in purchasing what is actually pretty expensive items to service a need that arises only occasionally.

A possible solution would be to do what the power companies do. When there is an ice storm in Mass., for instance, power companies from the surrounding states send trucks and personnel to help with the task of keeping the lights on. A similar program might work well where equipment is dispatched from those states with equipment to those without. Of course, the problem in this idea is that, as you're aware, storms like the NE is currently experiencing can cover hundreds of thousands of square miles, so those that have the equipment can't spare it anyway, as they are tasked with covering their own problems.

I'm glad I live in SW Fl today though! I'll tell you this; if an ice storm ever happened in Lee County, we would really and truly be fucked!

36. However, condolences to those who have died from the storm
just because the percentage of deaths is low doesn't mean the people who fall under the wrong side of the percentages are worthless or their families.
