13. actually, it is.
i saw star wars on opening night, with my mouth agape as i watched it.
i saw avatar last night in 3d on the imax screen, and it was just...incredible.
the story definitely has it's weak points- but the overall experience is like nothing else in film before it.
i plan on multiple viewings.

15. Why not? It's fun to play video games more than once.

At some point, does the film start to look like it isn't just a big CGI experiment?

Whatever the film's merits, absolutely nothing I've seen in trailers or stills has made me think that Pandora is any more a real place than the Gungan city.

I would be pleased to learn that I'm wrong.

16. "At some point, does the film start to look like it isn't just a big CGI experiment?"
yep...pretty much from the first frame.

one effect that i did find extremely annoying- whenever they're walking in the forest, it luminesces(?) under their feet, and it starts to feel a lot like the dance floor in an 80's disco.

but- until/unless you've seen it in imax 3d- you really shouldn't mock something that you're completely lacking in knowledge about about...what i'm trying to say is that as far as this film goes- until you see it as it's intended to be seen, you really have no way of making an informed judgment. the phantom menace came out 10 years ago- the state of the art has changed at least a little bit since then.

18. WEll, that's kind of my point
If Pandora looks as real as the Gungan city, then something is rotten in the state of the art. Alternatively, if the trailers are so poorly representative of the finished product, then maybe somebody should have said "hey, Jim--this makes your movie look like an XBox game."

Also, the nearest IMAX venue is an hour away me with tickets @ $12, so unless this is the best film that will ever be made, then I doubt it's worth the trip. Sorry I can't join in on the Cameron lovefest, but that's how it goes.

21. You love James Cameron's movies and want to marry them
I'll bet you get weak-kneed when Titannic comes on TNT every weekend.

Oh look! True Lies is on AMC again! Set the Tivo!

5. Yeah.
It's weird how a plastic stop-motion model can seem so much more real than the most expensive CGI that Lucas (for example) could buy.

Cameron has raised the bar on lowering the bar IMO.

Of course, I haven't seen it. I've only seen the previews which are, in themselves, interminable and boring. If the film is actually an exciting tour de force, then Cameron should sue whoever put the trailers together.

6. Well I've seen a bunch of spots and interviews about the movie
Almost all of them hype the freakin Imax bullshit and special effects that Cameron had to invent for this film. I believe there was one thing I saw where they talked about the story. Something about blue smurf indians and we are coming to destroy smurfville?

14. I think you're thinking of somebody else
I really enjoyed Abrams' Star Trek, I thought that Terminator 3 was terrific, and I loved the whole LOTR trilogy.

Not sure what would have given you the idea that I'm anti-genre-film.
