Just happened to find this 1975 performance by Springsteen. It'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

36. From London's Hammersmith Odeon--I have the DVD of this show and you're right
about how great this song and everything on this DVD is. Bought it as a birthday present to myself 3 or 4 years ago. 2 DVD's; this and a documentary: "The Making of Born To Run", with some bonus footage from 1973 (Thundercrack and a couple others) and a remastered Born To Run CD.

"Everything stops ya hear five quick shots...the cops have come up for air."

And Saint in the City was the first Springsteen song I ever heard; been hooked ever since that moment.

22. Down And Out In New York City ~ Gov't Mule
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 05:25 PM by jus_the_facts
I was born in NYC on a Monday
It seems I was out shinin' shoes 'bout Tuesday noon
All the bad cats, in the bad hats doin' me a real big favor
The bad cats, in the bad hats playin' it on real good

Here's a dime boy, give me a shine, boy

When the cold wind blows, it lives in NYC
The street's no place to be but there you are
So you try hard or you die hard, no really gives a good damn
You try hard or you die hard, no one gives a damn

Here's a dime boy, give me a shine boy
You're down and out in NYC

Ain't no place to be but where can you go?
Dwon and out, in NYC
Never, never, never never gonna get this way again

Gonna get myself together in the morinin'
Leave it all and one bad dream
All the bad cats, in the bad hats doin' me a real big favor
The bad cats in the bad hats, playing it on real good

Here's a dime boy, give me a shine boy
Down and out in NYC

Ain't no place to be, where can you go?
When you're down and out in NYC
Ohh, time I want you down, to go

Need a friend, where can you go?
Down and out, in NYC
Never, never, never gonna get this way again

34. Native New Yorker...
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 06:52 PM by Oceansaway
You grew up ridin' the subways, running with people
Up in Harlem, down on Broadway
You're no tramp, but you're no lady, talkin' that street talk
You're the heart and soul of New York City

And love, love is just a passing word
It's the thought that you had in a taxi cab that got left on the curb
When he dropped you off at East 83rd

Oh, oh, oh
You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker

New York girl, ooh, ooh, ooh

Music plays, everyone's dancin' closer and closer
Makin' friends and findin' lovers
There you are lost in the shadows, searchin' for someone someone]
To set you free from New York City

And, whoa, where did all those yesterdays go
When you still believed love could really be like a Broadway show
You are the star, win the applause

Oh, oh, oh
You're a native New Yorker
No one opens the door
For a native New Yorker

Ooh...ooh...ooh...
Native, native, native New Yorker

Where did all those yesterdays go
When you still believed love could really be like a Broadway show
You are the star

You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker

You should know the score, you should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker, oh, oh, oh

You're a native New Yorker

Whoa, oh, ho, ho, you're a native New Yorker
You should know the score

You're a native New Yorker

What you waitin' for, no one opens the door

For a native, for a native New Yorker

53. U2--New York
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYFxIkvpwIw

In New York, freedom looks like too many choices
In New York, I found a friend to drown out the other voices
Voices on a cell phone
Voices from home
Voices of the hard sell
Voices down a stairwell
In New York
Just got a place in New York

In New York, summers get hot, well into the hundreds
You can't walk around the block without a change of clothing
Hot as a hair dryer in your face
Hot as handbag and a can of mace
New York
I just got a place in New York
New York
New York

In New York, you can forget, forget how to sit still
Tell yourself you will stay in, but it's down to Alphaville

New York
New York, New York
New York, New York
New York

The Irish been coming here for years
Feel like they own the place
They got the airport, city hall
Dance hall, dance floor, they even got the police
Irish, Italians, Jews and Hispanics
Religious nuts, political fanatics in the stew
Happily, not like me and you
That's where I lost you
New York
New York, New York
New York
New York, New York
New York
New York

In New York, I lost it all to you and your vices
Still I'm staying on to figure out my mid-life crisis
I hit an iceberg in my life
You know I'm still afloat
You lose your balance, lose your wife
In the queue for the lifeboat

You better put the women and children first
But you've got an unquenchable thirst for New York

New York
New York
New York, New York

In the stillness of the evening
When the sun has had its day
I heard your voice whispering
Come away now to New

New York
New
New York
Oh-ooh

55. New York Town, by Woody Guthrie
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 06:56 PM by LeftishBrit
New York Town

I was standing down in New York town one day,
Standing down in New York town one day,
I was standing down in New York town one day,
Singing hey, hey, hey, hey.

I was broke and I didn't have a dime,
I was broke and I didn't have a dime,
I was broke and I didn't have a dime,
Singing hey, hey, hey, hey.

Every good man gets a little hard luck sometimes,
Every good man gets a little hard luck sometimes,
Every good man gets a little hard luck sometimes,
Singing hey, hey, hey, hey.

Down and out and he ain't got a dime,
Down and out and he ain't got a dime,
Down and out and he ain't got a dime,
Singing hey, hey, hey, hey.

I'm gonna ride that new morning railroad (train),
I'm gonna ride that new morning railroad (train),
I'm gonna ride that new morning railroad (train),
Singing hey, hey, hey, hey.

Never comin' back to this man's town again,
Never comin' back to this man's town again,
Never comin' back to this man's town again,
Singing hey, hey, hey, hey.
