24. why?
curious.

You don't think the heads are from deer that were killed just to make that silly display do you? I have two mounted deer heads out on my "humor porch". They have a sentimental value to me because each were from my two granfathers, but I do funny (to me at least) things to them like feather boas or gaudy hats, joints from lips etc. There are millions of those things out there, that seems like a pretty funny use for them, to me.

4. I hate them
I do. I seriously do.

it's not hunting that I'm against--- it's making light of the killing, laughing at the death of beautiful animals that I hate. No respect for life or beauty or innocence

human beings really suck. I hate this species sometimes.

6. good for you then
live your life numbed to other lives; feel nothing; experience no sorrow but also no heartfelt connection.

seek a closed loop of self-stimulation.

hooray.

22. ok then
came across as aimed at anybody who found the image amusing

I see it as making fun of both the corny twig deer xmas decorations and a jab at self-righteous anti-hunters/AR types.

Like projection, perception is an interesting topic.

27. yes it is...perception is incredibly complex.
It's a gigantic gestalt reflecting an individual's culture, family, personality, individual experiences, even the passing mood in the moment....and that's just for starters. Add in the method of communication and its limitations... oh screw it, I'm rambling!!

See, now I like the twig deer winter solstice decorations. They appeal to me on aesthetic levels. Natural materials, wood and light, muted colors, visually appealing with a somewhat folk art vibe, etceteraaah dee dah.... We live in the woods so they are very pretty here.

Now, the kind of decorations (if by 'decoration', you mean expensive eyesores made of synthetic fabrics in screaming primary colors, pieceworked by women in a sweatshop somewhere in Asia....oh screw, I wish I had the Rude Pundit's articulation, but sadly.....) that make me puke are those air filled parachute characters littering yards.

10. this isn't new- but for a lot of working people deer mean food on the table
in the winter.

Somehow it's very easy in our wealthy culture to forget that not everyone has the luxury of being moral about what they eat.

we eat deer meat.

What I feel upset about is making a joke of the animal you killed.

25. is the joke worse than the killing?

 A lot of art is always offensive to somebody - you could probably make the argument that the person is simply representing what is a typical act for them. Yes, it's kind of gross, but so are a lot of things.

I don't like to think of animals being killed either, but the moralizing is tiresome when so many people here in the US and around the globe have no food, lost their houses, no water, electricity, jobs, etc.

26. hey, when I wrote that post, I was reacting to the pictures
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 07:47 PM by BlancheSplanchnik
They got me emotional. "Overwrought", as some here call it ;) -- but I don't think feeling deeply for those who are hurt by inhumane people is something to feel ashamed of.

Yeah, moralizing gets obnoxious. Course, DU's reason for existing is to provide an arena for people who feel strongly about their perspectives and are compelled to talk about them...

I guess it's a fine line. I didn't think I was moralizing at the time I posted, but it's all in the reading, I suppose.

*********
I just personally needed to add, that just because there is much suffering doesn't mean that "other" suffering deserves a lesser place, not to be spoken of until the A list issues are resolved! (they never will be)

It's like the story of the little kid saving starfish washed up on the beach. A jaded grown-up walking by admonishes her, telling her that there are bigger problems, and anyway, she can't save them all.

The kid puts another starfish back in the water and says, "Well, I sure made a difference to THAT one!"

30. I'm pretty sure the joke is NOT about the killing but more about the reaction...
that some get from the display.
it is a shock display of lights...red lights representing blood.
some see it as an original and thoughtful display, but
those that get upset about it are the ones that I believe for which it is meant.
And from the reaction of at least a couple people here, it is an effective display.

28. there're alot of taxidermy shacks out here in the boonies, where it's incredibly beautiful
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 08:01 PM by BlancheSplanchnik
Yet this entitled attitude, "king of my domain", top of the foodchain thing....

I hate walking into places with dead stuffed animals all over the place... there's one little shop out here in the boonies absolutely stuffed to the rafters... with misspelled signs on the wall, pictures of (mostly) guys displaying their dead 8-point buck, holding its head up as its tongue droops out of its mouth....guns and knives, wood and coal heating supplies... and there's the couple's kid, playing with hunting knives, watching some cartoon that was full of loud explosions....

They're nice business people too; it was hard for me in there.

It's just a mindset of guns over nature, violence over beauty, blindness to suffering that I find tragic.
