Congratulate me, everyone. I got a "B" in Statistics! |
|
This means I don't have to take it again! (This was my second time taking Statistics.)
Yay, me!

What a silly, useless science. But my Stats instructor was the best! He kept telling me and my classmates, "Don't let this stuff scare you!"
So, I hung in there and passed.

27. I had a panic attack when I took my open book stats final!!! |
|
My professor had pity on me and let me redo it as a take home exam. The book we had used in my class was useless to me, I didn't understand anything it said. I borrowed my daughters statistics book and finally understood what the course was all about. Well, I understood it long enough to work all the problems in the take home test. It is amazing what a difference there was in the two books and they were both for Master level classes.
And yes, it is a silly useless science except to learn how you can do research and created biased/stacked results. I don't trust much of research statistics now.

It's okay to take a class twice, if it means that you really know the material the 2nd time. I took statistics twice, too. It's not as easy as the name sounds.

10. I got a "B" in Statistics my first time around. |
|
That's because my Stats teacher fell off the wagon and started chasing her ex-husband around the country mid-semester though. The school raised everyone's grade by one letter, effectively passing everyone, to make it up to us.

Give an example of when a one-tailed hypothesis test would be appropriate.
What are the four main assumptions made in ordinary least squares regression?

15. You have internalized early 21st century statistics dogma, and you will be unprepared |

for the conceptual revolution that will completely overthrow it.
You were supposed to fail and take it again so that you would be motivated to play a leading role in the revolution.

20. Stats was definitely a challenge. I think physics would have been |
|
easier......from what I recall it was easier to figure out what the formulas were computing. C is the speed of light, M is mass, E is energy, etc.
The percentage plus or minus the confidence index z-equivalent of 2.575 times the square root of P(1 - P)/N.......
OMG! I need more gin!

Like Calculus II, where the analytic geometry and infinite series stuff balanced out my ineptitude at solving (some) integrals, the probability stuff made up for my dislike of statistics. I hate busy work and cranking through an integral or solving an ODE is busy work, in my opinion. Let a computer do it. Understanding the concepts and setting up the equations should be 80% of the grade anyway.
But probability! That leads to understanding gambling and Bayesian analysis and Game Theory! Fun, fun stuff!

32. How was your statistics class? |
|
We had to take two at my college; the first one dealt almost strictly with formulas and crazy symbols -- it was horrible. The second was more applicable to real world situations, where we used more Excel and things like that. It was still difficult at times, but not as bad as the first statistics class, and it was a lot more fun.
Or are you talking about some super-high level engineering statistics class or something? :)
Congrats.

48. I took statistics in a Health Info program at the tech school about 17 years ago. |
|
At that time I hadn't had a math class in 17 years and I had never used a calculator in a math class before, so surprise, surprise. I was the only guy in a class of about 18 and some of these females were just out of high school the year before and were totally freaked about taking Statistics which was a required class and one of the most failed (meaning you had to get a 'C').
I aced my first test and was feeling pretty good and thought I had things down pat for the second test, but I was surprised when I bombed that one badly. I then scrounged for every extra credit point and assignment I could get. In the end that class had 2 people who got an 'A' and I was one of them. The other was another nontraditional student, a single mom in her early 30s.
That 'A' in Stats was one of my proudest academic achievements so congratulations.
