Why the hell is Quadrant I on the top-right?

3. Because cos 0 = 1, and cosine is x/r.
Duh.

8. Because that's where everything is positive.
Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one.

9. Okay...
But that doesn't really make any more sense. By that logic (it would seem) Quadrant III should be Quadrant IV, since that's where everything is negative.

21. No, it's all about the trig functions.
First, starting with an (acute) right triangle, sine is the ratio of the opposite side to the hypotenuse and cosine is the ratio of the adjacent side to the hypotenuse. As the angle increases from 0 to 90 (or pi/2 for us geeks), the sine function goes from 0 to 1 and cosine goes from 1 to 0--both are positive, just like the coordinates in the "first quadrant." From 90 to 180, sine is still positive and cosine goes negative. From 180 to 270, both sine and cosine are negative--hence the reasoning of the lower left quadrant as the third quadrant.

Next week: what's up with hyperbolic sine?

7. Are you objecting to the commas?
"Therefore" is always set off in commas. What he actually said was <<Je pense donc je suis.>> I don't know what the rules were in the 17th century regarding commas, but as I was using a modern English* translation, I used the commas. The phrase is usually translated into Latin (for some reason) as "Cogito ergo sum" and the concept behind it is simply known as The Cogito. This should not be confused with "Cogito ergo spud" or "I think, therefore, I yam."

*Not to be confused with Modern English as I have no desire either to stop the world or melt with you.

19. That's nothing. He was simultaneously slammed as ...
...as an atheist and as a clerical apologist. Plus the queen of Sweden worked him to death. He went to Sweden because it had the pleasant feature of not wanting him killed. So, I think he might have overlooked the "e" since there was no standard spelling anyway.

Besides, he such a drunken fart that he would not have noticed.
