i don't have a problem w. "no problem," in fact, i use it myself
they are not literally saying they don't have a problem w. you, it's a form of saying "you're welcome" after you've said "thank you" -- it's just modern and cooler and more hip or maybe it was modern and cooler and more hip in 1982 anywaysssss... :-)

I'm a Christian, and my response to Christian friends who spout this one is "What kind of God would take you right up to a hair's width of your breaking point and HOLD YOU THERE?"
They tend to shut the hell up at that point.

When people ask me "how's it going" and it's not going great, I just KNOW they don't want to hear about it. So I don't say it's going great 'cuz that would be a lie.
So I say its going . . . . this is when some says that to you and you know neither one of you is going to stop walking in your different directions just' cuz the question was asked.

"what goes around comes around" or other sayings that imply the person is more karmic than thou, such as "god never gives you more than you can handle" -- fuck that noise!
if a saying makes you sound like you're trying to be younger than you are, that's a harmless vanity and it doesn't bother me
if a saying makes the person sound like they think they're better and more beloved of god than i am...yah...i got no use for that cliche and "what goes around comes around" and other karma-based crap sayings...hate em, just hate em

Either to people you're speaking to, or for yourself. I did that today, when talking about my father's health. Riiiiiiiiight, because success, having it all . . . hell, let's just say "GETTING AHEAD IN THIS SEWER OF A LIFE" is only limited to the well-to-do and slobs like me shouldn't even TRY for anything other than the pittance we're handed.

43. yes that is a particularly cruel and hateful saying |
|
when it enjoyed wide currency in the late 1980s/early 90s new age era, then i knew a lot of people who decided to quit good jobs to "do what they loved"
the money didn't follow, and because you don't get your career back once you throw it away, most of those people are in pretty bad shape today, i can't think of anyone from that circle who ever got back to what they'd given up
no, honey, growing thyme and rosemary plants WON'T replace a job as a real estate broker, no, honey, throwing pots WON'T replace a job in an office
one of my friends finally said, you know, if i had understood that the good times wouldn't last forever and it would really be that hard to get back what i gave up, i wouldn't have done it
but most of them never admitted to anything, they just start avoiding you so you won't see them poor

Seriously, failing to think of every possible consequence doesn't mean that you didn't think the action through properly.

I was having a debate with someone and they said this in response to a question of mine. The way I see it is that they were incapable of justifying their position so this mindless cliche is all they could say.

60. This little conversation stopper..... |
|
Went over to see some neighbors in my little town to look at their christmas lights. They took over an abandoned nursing home and keep saying they are gonna turn it into a youth center, or something, but I don't think they have the money or the smarts to keep it in compliance with the state. One of the local cops says they didn't pay their bill so they sometimes have no water.
Well, this large guy who is obviously very bright starts talking to me and hubby. He says he has a couple of bachelor's degrees, and uses words like "Physiognomy" and "gestalt". Properly. I'm in total shock at hearing someone who seems to be educated in this little town.
Hubby has a B.S. and M.S. in Physics. This guy starts talking about some weird invention he wants to work on and I'm thinking "oh boy, one of those....".
Big guy starts talking to husbo about electronics etc. and says, "Newton was WRONG".
Screeching halt. I was listening and just kinda shocked. And I'm no physics major.
After we left we decided the education did not cover up the stupid completely. :wtf:

"The far right sometimes have a valid viewpoint; we shouldn't dismiss them out of hand" or ANY variation on that theme.
On a different note: the use of such expressions as 'right-brained' and 'left-brained' to mean 'creative' and 'logical'. It is a complete myth that there is that sort of simplistic division between the two hemispheres of the brain, let alone that people's personalities can be classified in that way.
And on the same topic, "We only use ten percent of our brains". NOT true (even if people sometimes act that way)!

I hate "This too shall pass." I also hate "That which does not kill you makes you stonger," but here's the one that makes me scream:
"A little hard work never killed anyone."
Bullshit. Hard work kills people all the time.
