Does anyone remember LitKicks?
A few years ago there was a discussion site called LitKicks.com. It's since morphed into a more modest but often worthy http://www.litkicks.com">blog, but in the early 2000s it was one big, sprawling party. A bit like DU but for writers.

The http://www.archive.org/web/web.php">Wayback Machine has some pages. LitKicks started out as a http://web.archive.org/web/19981205222233/http://www.litkicks.com/index.html">beat lit. fansite then it grew wings and flew http://web.archive.org/web/20040107140604/http://www.litkicks.com/index.html">high till its sandals began to melt in 2004. I loved how the statue of Gertrude Stein on that page was captioned "The other statue of liberty".

Take a wander http://web.archive.org/web/20040409144226/www.litkicks.com/BeatPages/writingBoards.jspyou">here, for example, and http://web.archive.org/web/20040604002931/www.litkicks.com/BeatPages/discussionBoards.jsp">here. Sadly the wilder sides like the Flame Board and Mindless Chatter are incomplete, the thread titles link to nowhere. Possibly a good thing.

Heady days. I was musing just now, as you do after a nice dinner, and wondered if any DUers hung out at LitKicks back then ...?

1. I'm familiar with the site
Good source of Jack Kerouac (and other BeatGen authors)info, I was a frequent visitor back in the mid to late 90's...I was the first webmaster for Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! I also used to hang out in alt.books.beatgeneration in the old USENET newsgroups :)

2. ah, someone
Hi ... Agreed, LitKicks was a great source of quality info. I mostly went there for the conversation and occasionally posted some writing, but I never went to your Lowell Celebrates Kerouac, I bet it was a blast.

6. I did, marzipanni, thank you
Good read, that Erik Davis article. You can't preserve everything, but at least something like this can be documented and its story told. Have you been to the Heights yourself?

"When people get naked together, they no longer carry the pretensions of their careers or identities. It was a great equalizer." Reminds me of a pleasant afternoon with a few people around a pool at a place not unlike this, in the hills outside Melbourne. Standing, sitting, swimming, talking, gazing into space, each had dignity and grace whatever their shape.
