Dear God, do I fuckin' hate every last note recorded by The Eagles.

I liked about one CD's worth of their stuff when it was new, but other than "Stairway To Heaven," "Frampton Comes Alive," and the Buckingham-Nicks edition of Fleet3wood Mac, they hold the distinction for the most incessantly overplayed tripe in the history of Rock & Roll.

I hear the fake-assed reggae of "Hotel California" and oh-so-clever lines like "Her mind is Tiffany twisted, she's got the Mercedes bends" and I want Mike Tyson to go over to Don Henley's house and bite off his fucking ear just like he did with Evander Holyfield.

Self-absorbed, coke-addled hippie pissants. Fuck the Eagles. Especially Don Henley. Well, especially Don Henley and Glen Frey. That Miami Vice shit was the straw that broke the camel's back.

When Carl Wilson dies, the Beach Boys were over. The last greatness from the band came with "Sail On Sailor" from "Holland." Brian had fits of brillians now and again...as did Carl...during the final years, but when Carl died, the brand should have been retired.

Mike Love, obviously, had other ideas.

They just overstayed their welcome, plain and simple. I was a big fan of Linda Ronstadt during her peak early years, including this 1971 album:



...which featured Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner before they became The Eagles and recorded their first album.

Same thing happened with Linda, too...and I blame producer Peter Asher for this...the more she strayed away from the sound that put her on the map and started chasing "hits" with really crappy cover versions of Chuck Berry songs, the less I wanted to listen to her.

I do understand that from all reports, the Eagles are ( or at least were) as Amerigo ( who I almost always agree with musically) put it, " self-absorbed,coke addled pissants, but that would just put them even with about every other successful band of that era. And if anything, I think you underestimated with your "better than 90%" comment. I'd put it as closer to 99% myself for their extensive bodies of work with consistently wonderful melodies and harmonies and often ( not always, but often) highly intelligent lyrics. So what if they haven't done anything good in a long while. Neither have the Beatles or Mozart...P.S. If Amerigo sees this, I hope you see it as a shout out as opposed to a call out...It's clear that you really know your shit musically, as do old mark and I; just gotta totally disagree with you here , for once .

yeah I like my % estimate..I think you were being too kind to the others....90% would mean 1 out of every 10 bands had a higher quality output of music over the years than The Beachboys or Eagles. ( Shoulda said misunderestimated, but it wasn't part of my strategery). But really, I'm baffled as to the level of hatred of The Eagles' music by many people. exactly as you put it: talented pros and some amazing music. But, to each their own I guess...

There were a couple albums where Carl tried to hold it together, but for the most part, any so called "Beach Boys" album where Brian wasn't involved is full of FAIL.

The Eagles..... should have left it alone after the 1980 breakup. Nothing they have done since their reunion in 1994 was worth listening to more than once.

They were BOTH quite good.

I saw Don Henley some years ago on the opening night of his Inside Job tour. He was really good.
I don't understand the hate for both of these bands.

And I am not tone deaf. I studied classical piano for twelve years, classical violin for eight years, played in lots of community orchestras and chamber groups, sang in church choirs, directed church choirs, played the piano at church sometimes, taught piano, taught violin, took voice lessons for two years and learned to sing opera in three languages.....and I GREW UP listening to Top 40, British Invasion, and 60s and 70s rock.

I was eight years old when the Beatles hit.

I know competent musicians when I hear them. In any genre.

The last band that was good enough for me to give a crap about broke up in 1983...The Police.

The Beach Boys and the Eagles are quite good.
