My final short film for my first semester at NYU
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 04:04 PM by Ava
In my first semester I took a class called Digital Frame & Sequence. In the class we take photos with a DSLR and record audio in order to make a video. For my final project I decided to take a poem and put visuals to it and had a friend from my scholar's program do the voice over reading. The photos were hard to take. I had to turn a plain black room into a prison cell with lighting. I basically built a prison wall with a window out of foam poster boards and then used a lighting kit to light through the window opening to make the lighting in the room seem like that of a prison cell. It was really cool working with the lighting kit and designing the lighting for the shoot. :)

Hope you like!

5. thank you!
It took quite a bit of playing around and changing things to get the lighting I wanted, but I think it worked out and I learned a lot int he process.

11. You captured the mood perfectly...
all of your shots are very nicely designed. Great contrast. I particularly liked the close-up of the prisoner with the highlight in the eye -- very effective, and a nice touch. Very well done.

7. My dear Ava!
Wow, sweetie!

This is really well done. I cannot wait to see what you come up with as you mature...

I accidentally rated you at 3 stars...sorry! I wasn't sure how to do it, and I clicked in the wrong place...

I left a comment as well!

10. Damn good! The cinematography was first rate!
Years ago I took 8mm and 16mm film courses at a place called Boston Film/Video Foundation.

I'd love to get back into that if I had the time and $$.

14. Dark. Morose. Sinister. Dismal. First off, I'm not a black & white
fan, unless it's ice cream. Then I'm all for it, chocolate & vanilla.
People think b&w is artsy/craftsy. It isn't. It's a technical deficiency.
I'm looking for a feeling here.
Some people look for good feelings.

17. You do have a knack for the B&W
it made me think about my early days in desktop publishing, when grayscale was fresh and new (and you were just starting on solid food!!) Seems like there ought to be a "Techni-B&W" system to display it to maximum effect.

19. Good video, Ava. Everyone here, do Ava a favor...
Some asshat using the nickname "liberal trash" ripped on our friend Ava, unjustifiably I think. Could everyone here go to Ava's video and vote down dickhead's comment? Thanks.

So I decided to post here because I did a DU search to find your film, and I thought others might not have caught it amidst the Christmas eve busy-ness.

You did a good job! It brought tears to my eyes, and this Phil Ochs song to mind... (and he's singing it in 1967 at an old hangout that is still there, in your neighborhood, "The Bitter End". Have you been there?)
