Is it bad to eat an egg a day?
Recently I realized that I was getting way too skinny. I thought about the situation, and realized I wasn't really eating very much. So I started eating (in addition to my regular diet) an egg sandwich -- basically a sandwich like an Egg McMuffin from Mickey D's, except that it tastes better. A toasted English muffin, with one egg, a slice of ham, and a slice of cheese.

I've gained about 12 pounds in the two months since, and I've had a couple of people comment that I look much more healthy.

I'm just wondering if the one egg a day plus the slice of American cheese is really bad for my cholesterol?

1. Disclaimer: this is not medical advice
The ham is why you've gained weight. And the cheese, if it is not low fat, also. Eggs are a good source of lean protein. Only prblem is, in excess, eggs will prbably raise your cholesterol level.

Bottom line: it's not the healthiest choice for breakfast. Though I can't talk. Even though I know better, I love blueberry Eggos in the morning. :-)

3. I should have such problems...
Too skinny? I wish that was me. Speaking as one who has fought the weight battle all her life, and has worked lots with nutritionists, I can say that an egg a day is probably not going to hurt you, especially if you exercise frequently. (Exercise raises your HDL or "good" cholesterol.) Nor, will the ham. Ham is actually very lean, as is Canadian bacon. The latest I heard is that an egg a day is okay for most people, but those with high cholesterol should cut back.

The cheese will do you in, however. You can make your sandwich a little healthier by either using a low fat cheese or some soy cheese. There are some pretty good soy cheeses out there that taste pretty much like American style cheeses. And, being made from soy, there is no cholesterol in them. If you are still worried about the eggs, switch to an egg substitute a couple of times a week. They're made of just the whites, so you'll get all of the good proteins, etc.

4. Eggs are very good for you
Most of the value is in the yolk, but the more you cook an egg the less nutrition it has. If a person's overall diet is good eggs don't do any harm. It's the flour and sugar and corn syrup in processed foods that are the problem. Oh, and those hydrogenated oils.

The total percentage of processed yucky foods you eat is the thing to look at in your diet.

The thing about cholestrol is, we NEED cholestrol, and LOW cholestrol can be a bad thing too if it is too low. The brain can't function without it. The cholestrol levels people are told to maintain now, complements of the cholestrol-lowering drug companies, is way lower than it used to be, and the cholestrol drugs are not without their bad side effects, whether you are aware of them or not.

I believe going to the expense of buying real organic eggs is worth it too. I don't know about Walmart organic eggs, as I bought a regular organic brand name from them once and there was just something very wrong with the eggs. I ended up throwing the rest of the carton away. I don't know if that was just a weird carton of eggs or if there is something different about the organic eggs sold to Walmart because of the profit-margin pressure they put on their suppliers.

I also think for people who don't eat much meat for whatever reason, eggs are as good as or superior to meat for their protein content.

7. I believe the egg-cholesterol deal has been debunked.
Eggs are now deemed great for you.

8. only way to tell is have your cholesterol checked.
an egg a day should be fine for most people. the cheese and ham are probably helping more with the weight gain than the egg (depending on how you are cooking it)

add a tomato slice or some fruit/veggies with your sandwich to make the meal a little healthier

9. The Atkins diet has eggs and cheese on the menu but you can have very few carbs. And cholesterol
goes way down. Since you are eating it on an english muffin I don't know what the effect would be. Why not go to your doctor and have your cholesterol checked out. (And also get your thyroid tested with the same blood test).
