Watching A Hard Days Night on VHF1 and it really mae me think |
|
about what made the Beatles so different from the other rock-n-roll bands of the time...
The songs are well constructed, they knew their craft...
They had three strong singers and weren't forced to rely on one front man...
They had great harmonies without having to resort to falsetto voices to get the triads going...
They sang about doubt and pining for the opposite sex without whining about their travails...
Every person in the band was a solid musician...
They had a thirst to be a great band and the fierce determination to do it...
The loved what they were doing...
They paid their dues by playing whenever and where ever they could (They spent over a year playing seven days a week at Hamburg night clubs. 12-14 hour days playing all types of music. That is one reason their songs are so well crafted and included all sorts of styles.)
And, most important, they were easy on the eyes...

2. I do think they loved what they were doing and liked each other. A happy meeting of souls. |

3. The lyrics. You have left out the lyrics, all original, and endless, |
|
and cryptic seeming, mystical, but later proved to be ordinary observations from their lives. Simple genius, done simply. Poetry. Totally different haircuts. Unique, original. Unprecedented. Cute? Handsome? You may say. Amazing. dc

4. And they were different. Non-home-grown. Plus, we NEEDED them, post-assassination. |

5. And 45 years after A Hard Day's Night was released, the movie is still |
|
fresh and very watchable. The scene where George inadvertently wanders into a casting session for a pop culture tv show was way ahead of its time. And the scene of the Beatles being asked inane questions by a roomful of reporters demonstrates that the more things change the more they remain the scene.
Watching the movie, however, is bittersweet. Knowing what's ahead for the group is very sad. Still, especially considering that they stopped touring in '66 and broke up by '70, the Beatles have had an amazingly long-lasting influence and continue to be "discovered" by each new generation. My 16-year-old is jealous that she wasn't around in the 60's to experience the group firsthand. She loves their music and put together a biographical video tribute to George for a history project last spring. Her teacher was very impressed. Turns out he plays drums in a Beatles tribute band!
