HipChick
You asked me something about travelling in Oz in earlier thread ... didn't mean to blow you off with my flippant answer, I'm a purist, I do flippant for its own sake. But did you really want some local knowledge? Happy to supply if you do.

Depends what you're into of course ...

I'll start with Sydney and talk about some other places later.

For cafes, bars, bookshops, small galleries, clothes, etc. your cool streets are Oxford St in Paddington, King St/Enmore St in Newtown and Glebe Point Rd in Glebe and also Balmain, whatever the hell the name of the main st there is.

You might want to catch the Gay Mardi Gras parade in Oxford St on the night of Feb 27th - glorious outpouring of politics and carnality.

Sydney has heaps of great beaches as you probably know, my favourites are Bronté, because it has a lovely ocean pool for if the surf's too rough and Maroubra, because it's not so crowded. But they're all good in their own way. There's a great walkway from Bondi Beach that winds round the sandstone headlands and through several beaches, lovely walk to do towards sunset. On one side the Pacific Ocean, on the other alternating passages of exquisitely formed sandstone and the houses of the fortunate classes.

West of Sydney the Blue Mountains, roughly two hours drive/train away, are where you'll find take-your-breath-away, free-your-soul majestic views from various lookouts and relief from the February heat. Major tourist destination, crowded on weekends with day-trippers, try for a weekday or two. Lots cafes, galleries.

That's all I got for now. Short Internet Attention Span Disorder. I'll add more as I think of it ... any questions?
