in which a band of scalp hunters, out of gunpowder, with several Apaches hot on their trail, fashion gunpowder out of the meager local sources available.

The basic ingredients were sulfur deposits from the caldera of a long extinct volcano, charcoal, and urine.

I don't remember Kirk whipping it out and making his own potassium nitrate, but I don't think McCarthy would have used it in his novel if it wouldn't have worked.

The wooden "gun" though would have probably just blown up.
