Where does the expression "screwed the pooch" come from?
We used to use a term "fucking the dog"back in the 70s which meant goofing off.

1. It was coined by Tom Wolfe in "The Right Stuff."
but it's based off the earlier phrase you mentioned.

4. A related phrase: "making puppies"
Sometimes it implies working away at doing something really stupid, as in

"look at that pipe run, they were really making puppies last night!

6. I used to work in law enforcement...
sex offenders, specifically. We had a guy who looked like a male model who worked in a restaurant but had a history of fucking chickens...he'd come into the office for his appointments and we'd all start singing "I feel like chicken tonight, like chicken tonight."

10. There is an old joke about coming home and patting the dog and screwing the wife.
The punch line is the guy comes home waisted and is so out of it, instead of doing the proper routine he screws up by patting his wife and fucking his dog. Hence the term screwing the pooch.

If you screw the pooch, you fucked up.

Um in case this is a sex thread ..
