FRANKLIN, Ind. -- A makeshift mask of women's panties didn't help an Indiana man elude police after they said he held up a convenience store.

Franklin Police Lt Chris Tennell said the Clark Oil Gas Station was robbed Monday night by a man carrying a large knife and wearing underwear to cover his face, reported television station WRTV in Indianapolis.

The man grabbed a customer and then took off with cash, cigarettes and a lighter, Tennell said.

Both the clerk and the customer were able to give police detailed descriptions of the suspected robber, and officers set up surveillance near his home.

Tennell said they later spotted Larry Bernard, 54, staggering and intoxicated, with a 12-inch kitchen knife in his waistband.

Officers also recovered women's panties, cash, cigarettes and a lighter matching the one stolen from the store in his pockets, Tennell said.
