1. How would you characterize your taste in music?
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 04:41 PM by mix
What are the themes of this style or genre?

I have my own ideas, but your core tastes are foreign to me, besides DK, but I am interested.

3. Most of this list is black metal.
However, within that that are many nuances. Deathspell Omega sound nothing like 1349 for instance, though they both fit in the genre.

My Dad Is Dead is actually fairly nice music, and nothing like anything else on the list. It's the one band on here that I think a lot of people could appreciate. Deathspell Omega is easily the hardest listen (and therefore the most rewarding when it finally clicks months later).

Here's the entire new My Dad Is Dead cd to stream for free in Itunes....
http://www.mydadisdead.com/streamer/index.php?p=A%20New%20Clear%20Route

As much as I love black metal it only accounts for about 30-35% of what I listen to. I also love jazz, punk, blues, thrash, ambient noise. I have stuff like Van Halen and Neil Diamond and Merzbow on my Itunes, so almost anything goes depending on my mood at any given moment. I will admit to being addicted to crunchy riffs though. I just can't help it. :)

5. black metal,
if you were describing this music to someone with minimal exposure to it, what words or themes would you use?

8. I can do it in one word: Misanthropic.
It's basically a subgenre of metal and thrash that usually (but not always, by any means) deals with anti-Christianity, satanism, free will, etc. It tends to be very extreme, either in the pace of the music itself or its lyrical approach which can be misanthropic and nihilistic to the extreme. In the case of Deathspell Omega the lyrics are more existentialist type of stuff (and some of it is based on the French writer, philosopher and post surrealist George Batialle, quite the interesting character...).

Example A of Deathspell's lyrics: http://www.metal-archives.com/viewlyrics.php?id=652076

Overall though it's a very negative type of music, not the stuff for optimists to bust out at parties. This isn't Up With People. There's an actual subgenre to black metal called "depressive/suicidal black metal", so there you go.

I must be fucked up because I love the stuff (he says as Cheap Trick plays in the background...go figure). :)

11. Give her a listen.
Kind of poppy, dance. But she's a talented musician. Plays piano and other instruments. Writes her own songs. You might like her! You never know! :)

14. The pop aspect is why I've steered clear.
Sugary pop is my least favorite type of music (behind opera even), and I thought Lady GaGa was just another Brittany Spears packaged product, but my friend says that's not the case at all (the fact that she can play an instrument and write a song is proof!). I'll give her a chance soon when I have a better attention span, which rules out tonight. :)

In the meantime, here's one sickeningly cute pop vid that I've been playing all year. These two make me sick they're so happy, but I love them. Even linking the vid is getting it into my brain!!

16. I love Lady Gaga but...
I think she is overrated. People act like she is so innovative but she's basically doing the same type of music that Britney has been doing. Yes, Lady Gaga does take a larger role in writing (she co-writes, not writes) and has even written songs for Britney. BTW, Britney has written or co-written songs and can also play the piano somewhat.

17. After listening to stuff like Deathspell Omega there was no way I'm expecting innovative from her.
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 05:53 PM by Forkboy
The pop genre itself just doesn't allow for much in the way of pure creativity, so what I'd be looking for mostly is how she works within the confines of that genre. From what I've seen she seems a little tongue in cheek about herself and her role in that scene, which I would consider a plus. I like people that take their music seriously but not themselves (my black metal pet peeve...these dudes need to lighten up). You'll laugh, but I find death metal to be the same way. There's very little room for sheer creativity while staying within the genre. Some people can pull it off in any genre (The Beatles, for instance), but it's rare.

I have a 3 listen rule for everything, so I'll get some of her songs together and give her a fair shake and see what happens. I'm usually able to find something good in almost all music. :)

18. Ok...
FYI, her best songs (IMO) are:

Poker Face
Bad Romance
Paparazzi

I almost included her song Telephone (one of the songs she originally wrote for Britney) on the "best of" list but Beyonce ruins the middle of the song.
