Well, a lot of his characters do have a "free market" worldview.

23. I never get surprised when I hear some millionaire actor is Republican |
|
Whether it's Norm MacDonald (who's totally awesome) or Bruce Willis or Gary Sinise or James Woods, I expect most actors I see on TV to have a certain belief in retaining their fortunes regardless of whatever anti-greed plotlines show up on the movies they make. Republicans in real life, unlike how they're described on DU, are invariably kind, decent, family loving human beings who believe in compassion and human dignity and preserving family farms and humane treatment of animals and environmental responsibility. What they don't believe is that the government should play a leading role in all the wonderful causes they believe in.
Now I think that history pretty clearly shows that most of these problems won't get real systemic treatment if you just "allow the free market" to fix them. You get half assed cosmetic treatments inconsistently applied and a lot of knock-on social problems left to fester and degrade the community's quality of life. But Republicans, don't lack heart, don't love pollution, don't hold open disdain for the natural beauty of the country's wilderness, and don't loathe the poor. Hell, most of them probably know an openly gay person and get along with him or her quite well.
So why are they still Republicans? I think it's a lack of a willingness to eat the cost of a disciplined approach to solving social ills--or maybe they fear the spreading, grasping, octopus like character of government (it's not like government intrusion in to people's personal business is a minor problem after all--government can be a very dangerous thing). Few people can be said to be completely consistant about anything. Why did Russel Feingold sell us out on public option? Why did Kerry oppose the war to liberate Kuwait but support the war to invade Iraq for still undemonstrated WMDs? Why do so many freedom-loving DUers idolize Hugo Chavez? Why did Jesus drive out the money changers one day, then warn the apostles the next that "the poor shall always be with you?"
People are inconsistent. Who was it who denounced a foolish consistency as the hobgoblin of little minds? Whoever it was, I'm sure he was a real asshole when he decided someone he was arguing against had some minor hypocrisy in their life.

25. For the record, Harvey Keitel doesn't actually seem to BE a Republican |
|
His FEC report(available online)showed him only making donations to Dems.
It always surprised me that Gary Sinise would be. He started with the Steppenwolf company, doing alternative theatre, and you don't normally associate that with being conservative. When I heard he was a 'pug, it did lead me to wonder if the "living off the government tit" speech that Lt. Dan does in Forest Gump wasn't just Sinise ad-libbing.
Point of information: Norm Macdonald is Canadian. Can he actually BE a Republican? Granted, he could be a Tory.

29. Then I'm wrong about Keitel. I may be confusing him with someone else. But... |
|
I'm positive I recall Norm Macdonald saying some very positive things about George W Bush during the 2004 campaign. My impressions may be colored by his friendship with the untalented Rob Schneider, who was also quoted as supporting Bush.

can be rearranged to spell "grow a penis." :P
(Wish I could take credit for this one, but the honor(?!) belongs to Dave Barry. I read lots of his books when I was a kid, which my parents believe explains a LOT.) ;) :hi:

That anagram was revealed in "Roseamerica's Baby", a political horror movie-satire that appeared in Paul Krassner's THE REALIST in the early 70's.

:) Sounds interesting, I may have to check that out sometime. (I guess I just assumed DB came up with it - I was probably only 6 or 7 when I started reading his books, and tended to take everything at face value, lol). :hi: Thanks for the info!

I assumed the hippies and yippies were able to suss that out pretty quickly in '68 or '69.
