What music are you listening to to start 2010?
Listened to all the albums I got for Christmas - Beatles box set, Adam Lambert - For Your Entertainment, Allison Iraheta - Just Like You, Florence And The Machine - Lungs, Carrie Underwood - Play On, Sarah Jarosz - Song Up in Her Head, Butterfly Boucher - Scary Fragile, Avett Brothers - I and Love and You among others. All definitely recommended; the Florence And The Machine has grown on me - not a fave, but pretty interesting. The Butterfly Boucher is strong where she focuses on what she does best: catchy pop melodies.

Also, Kesha is a big pop pleasure right now. And really liking Katharine McPhee's Unbroken - Katharine is really coming into her own!

2. Same stuff I was listening to
At the end of the year.. I'm really getting into ska/reggae. I've been listening to The Pietasters, The Aggrolites, The Slackers, Hepcat, and a little of the Specials and Westbound Train. But I really LOVE the Pietasters and saw them live last month as well..

3. I listened to that Vampire Weekend record, Contra, like 3 times in a row this morning
It's getting a lot of hype for good reason.

5. It's different. Feels maybe a tad more accessible at first listen
But I don't know. Maybe it was just my state of mind when I first heard it.

A fellow listener remarked,

"Pretty much everything I didn't know I wanted from Vampire Weekend."

Which is pretty accurate.

6. Paul Hardcastle...holy CRAP, do I LOVE this stuff.
Some people classify him as "electronica"...or "electro-pop"...while others prefer the dreaded "smooth jazz."

:scared:

BUT...his stuff is MELODIC, it occasionally features a few David Gilmour-style guitar solos, and he has RANGE.

It's often "bittersweet," and that is the ONE word I would use to describe my 2009, and that's what I've been in the mood to listen to.

He's recorded under his own name and also with "The Jazzmasters." I've cherry-picked a half dozen of his CDs to create what I consider to be a bliss-filled mix CD, but to be honest with you, I haven't heard a bad track yet.

Here's "Peace On Earth," featuring the aforementioned Gilmour-style guitar solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMk4OU_Kn5s

7. So Katherine's CD is good?
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 07:54 PM by blue_onyx
I really grew to like "Had It All."

I've been listening to Adam Lambert's CD, "3" by Britney, and "Telephone" by Lady Gaga.

Looking forward to new music. Many of my favorite people are releasing new CDs this year (Britney, Kelly Clarkson, Avril, Michelle Branch, Madonna).

9. Kelly's releasing a new one already?
I didn't know that. Hope Michelle releases her CD! Amazon had Dec. 31, but I think they just do that when they don't know the date.

Yes, Katharine's CD is a CLEAR improvement. Her debut had some good songs, but it really was not a good fit for her. She has a more organic style on the new CD; more like singer-songwriter. :hi:

12. Yes
Here's an article from Nov. 2009:

"Kelly Clarkson's post-"American Idol" career has been full of surprises, and judging from a recent interview with Chicago radio station Kiss FM 103.5, her next album may contain even more — like a departure from her signature rock/pop sound.

"Yeah, we're already working on it," she told DJ Ty Bentli. "We tour throughout 2010 overseas and then we actually are probably going to have released the record in the fall of 2010," Clarkson said of next year's agenda. "

I did just watch "It Might Get Loud"

Jack White is one interesting character? I really dug his playing. Pagey did well of course, but I got the feeling The Edge was not represented well?

He seemed out of it during the final jam:)

As I shared earlier, I've been salvaging some old 4-track stuff and putting them up on my website: http://rbouchard.viviti.com/ (Thanks for opportunity to share again. ;) )

I'm getting psyched up to restart a project an old band mate and I started mid last year.

Otherwise, I'm still loving pandora which is plating me a lot of Cat Power and Magenta Lane.

20. The same song by different artists.
.
AsahinaKimi turned me on to Tokyo Paradise Ska Orchestra.
(Thanks!!!:hi: )
.
Otherwise, I'm listening to different versions of "All
Along the Watchtower". I've pretty much come to the
conclusion that it may be impossible to record a BAD
version of that.
.
Please don't direct me somewhere to disillusion me of
that fantasy.
.
My favorite of all, so far? Dave Matthews Band -- in
particular the live version from Folsom Field on YouTube.
THAT is what an encore finale is SUPPOSED to sound like --
starting off soft and sweet and building, building,
EVER-BUILDING to a climax (in all senses of the word))
of epic proportion.
.
I quit smoking cigarettes in '97, but after listening to
that version, sometimes I get a momentary urge to light up.
.
.
.
Immediately followed by an urge to roll over and snore.
.

I've mostly been listening to my Andrew Lloyd Webber compilation but today I purchased a Johnny Cash CD and am listening to it now:hi:

Them Crooked Vultures is out of this world - I'm not a huge fan of recent QOTSA, but this stuff is amazing. Devin Townsend's "Addicted" is a great tribute to a love of heavy, positive music, I highly recommend it.
