I need help finding some kind of health insurance for my niece. |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 10:16 AM by Bertha Venation
Please, let's not turn this into a debate or a vent session on health insurance, okay?
She's 22 and does not work (seriously emotionally disabled). Her mom supports three people on one salary and just said to me, "I gotta get that girl some insurance." I thought to myself, "How?! You're fooling yourself."
I once heard of an insurance plan specifically for young low-income adults. Does anyone know about that?
I'm still looking for CA state stuff. I had a thread on this a few weeks ago and I'm going to look it up. (Edit: Now I can't find that thread!! Dammit!)
But now I'm asking for fresh suggestions.
Thanks.

where she lives, or related to SSI disability. I suppose it depends on the state's regulations...

2. You make good suggestions. But she has to get diagnosed first. |
|
My sister can't afford an appointment with a psychiatrist without insurance.
(Yeah, we diagnosed her, but it's obvious. Painfully obvious.)

to find someone to do an evaluation - barring that, SSI may have a list of pro-bono evaluators or facilities - that's what they do here. (or the psychiatric association)
yeah, diagnosis by family won't work... :D You need a professional to look at the whole picture. Hope you can find help for her.

9. Go here and look at the info for your state: |
|
www.healthinsuranceinfo.net, but verify with your state insurance dept if it hasn't been recently updated.
She and her mom are in CA? Do they qualify for Medi-Cal?
Watch out for those "young adult" plans, they often have high co-payments and don't cover many things, and can also have an out-of-pocket limit that can be hard to reach.
Good luck.
