The 'v' on my keyboard has collapsed. Sometimes it gets stuck. Is there anything I can do other
than getting a new keyboard? Anyone ever taken a keyboard apart? I'm good mechanically and am handy with a power driver.

1. The keys should just pop right off

and you can probably clean out the crud, or if the spring broke, maybe rob the spring from another key you don't use as much.

Edit: Emphasis on SHOULD... your mileage may vary. You might try popping off a non-vital key first to test the theory.

2. Laptop or regular keyboard?
I have taken regular keyboards apart and cleaned all
the keys and the case. Or you could just get a screwdriver
under the V key and pry it off. Check for any debris that
might be causing it to stick. I always take the caps lock key
off as soon as I get a new keyboard.

3. I've taken mine apart a few times.
There's not really much to them, start with poping off the "V" key (using a small screwdriver or even a table knife) and cleaning out the junk. If that doesn't fix it you can take out all the screws from the underside to get inside. There isn't much in there, what you wan't after that is the large rubber mat. They have replaced the individual springs that hold the keys up. There are several bumps on it, find the one where the "V" key is and see if it's inverted or torn. If inverted, re-invert it. If it's torn, get a new keyboard.

5. If you have a desktop, replacing really is the best option
as keyboards are dirt cheap. Otherwise follow the instructions already given.

7. This is NOT A joke.....clean it in the dishwasher
Disassemble it to its major components. If you can, do not separate each key from the plate they snap into. Set the circuit board aside. Put the plastic components in the dishwasher with detergent. Turn off the dryer. Run on a normal cycle. Remove and let air dry. Clean the circuit board with 91% or 100% isopropyl alcohol. Reassemble.

I have done this, and it works. No joke.
