Have you ever owned a fringed jacket?
I did. But it was 1969. I loved it ; it was stolen though in 1971. I suppose I'd get another but am I too old? I don't want to look like Will Geer in Jeremiah Johnson.

1. I wanted one back in that time frame
They were cool back then.

Hold off on your impulse to get another one. They are no longer cool.

2. My dear Capn Sunshine...
Alas, I have never owned one...

Is that picture you?

I don't think you have to be a certain age to wear one! If you want one, then you should have one!

:D

4. My cousin Eric had one.
His theory was that fringe attracts people. And I've known people who have owned them and kept them. I have fringe on my boots.

There's still plenty of it in New Mexico.

5. Not on purpose.
.
:D
.
Out here in Arizona, you still see a fringe jacket
now and then. Some of them are pretty sleek and
stylish and look exceptional, if not downright
hot!!!
.
I think jeans tucked into yer cowboy boots might
be a federally-mandated accessory touch, though.

16. Here in Texas
...if a person's wearing boots tucked into jeans, they better have cow shit on them boots and spurs on the heels or they will be shot on sight.

22. Ahh, then you know the difference between boots for show
...and boots for working. :hi:

When it comes to people that wear cowboys boots for function, the decision of tucked vs. untucked is entirely up to them and their needs. What I can't stand are those posers that parade around my town in their polyester suits with their pristine boots and their spotless Stetson hats - when, if they've ever ridden a horse or dug a fence post, it was forty years ago. It's rare I see a real working ranch hand because they're always working. Half the time they're dressed just like the farmers with a gimme cap and work boots. I've grown to really admire real cowboys - with their starched jeans, cloth handkerchiefs, always saying "please" and "Ma'm"...

When I was growing up we fought the Texas stereotype in my middle-size hometown. It wasn't cool to be a "kicker".

Now, I'm ashamed for having been such an asshole.

26. We have a few real cowboys left here in AZ
.
One night, I even talked to a man who had cowboyed
with Baxter Black from time-to-time (real cowboy AND
cowboy poet extraordinaire, for those unfamiliar).
.
Overseas in the mid-70's, about the time that "Urban
Cowboy" came out, there was a sickening surge of
cowboy wannabes -- and they almost all affected a
bowlegged walk, too. Hilarious sight to everyone
but them.
.
On the other hand, I worked at the time with a young
guy from around Choctaw, OK who had his mom mail his
boots to him. When they arrived, he brought the
package in and TORE it open, nuttering "I hope she
didn't!! I hope she didn't!!" over and over again.
When he got the box open, his face BEAMED as he said
"SHE DIDN'T!!!" What she didn't do was clean the cow
shit off of them. and we were all afraid that he was
going to start kissing those crust ol' boot heels.
.
I think he came THIS close to doing just that.

10. Yes I had one somewhere back then
although it wasn't as fringed as yours. I also had fringed ponchos, vests, shirts and moccasins. I crocheted and almost everyone I knew under the age of thirty got me to make them at least one poncho or vest. I also sewed and I think I might have made my jacket. I still have those old crochet patterns on my computer. The good old hippie days.

Whether or not you get another one now is up to you and what you feel comfortable wearing. I am sixty-four and still look at some fringe boots with lust in my heart, but would not even think about wearing them. But if I was healthy and active I might think about it, probably wouldn't do it, but would think about it. My daughter would burn them as quick as I could buy them. ;)

11. Yep, late 1960s and into the 1970s. Dangerous thing it was.
Wore it to a bar in Denver and draped it over the back of my chair. At the end of the evening I discovered that someone had tied some of the fringes to the top of the chair; when I put my arms in the sleeves and stood up to shrug it into place I got bonked in the back of the head with the chair. Another time I was visiting some friends in Albuquerque and had tossed the coat onto their picnic table bench; their dog hiked his leg and whizzed all over it. That night somebody stole it from the back seat where I'd tossed it to take to the dry cleaners. Dang coat gave me nuthin' but trouble, and I'd have another one in a heartbeat.

17. My mom made a fringed vest for me out of blue pleather
...when I was in sixth grade. Looking back, it was cheesy but the red pleather, double-breasted maxi coat she made for me was the finest piece of clothing I have ever worn.

I bought a leather fringe jacket in '81 when I was in Mexico. Got it for $30.00. I wore the shit out of it. Still have it but it's torn. If it weren't I'd wear it.

19. I had a black one that I wore for a year before I gave it to my lil sister.
It was sort of a biker/metal jacket.
My favorite jacket ever was a full length crinkled pig leather jacket that I still have(non-fringed).
I just cant wear it anymore..Damn you waistline!!

25. not THAT one
That's a little too cowboy. Now that I think about it, if I end up spending more time in AZ and NM this year, as my work is dictating, maybe I can pull it off.

I don't know about when I'm in Seattle. Might scare the straights.

Mine was dark brown, and I bough it at a flea market around 1971. Still have it, though it doesn't fit me any more.
