How do credit card flyer reward miles work |
|
Edited on Mon Jan-11-10 11:25 PM by Juche
I don't have a credit card, I use debit. But I got one in today offering 10k flyer miles if I sign up plus another 10k if I make a few thousand in purchases. I also have a few thousand in outstanding student loan debt I could pay off with savings, but haven't paid off yet.
So I figure if I get the card and pay a few thousand in student loan debts (then use savings to pay off the card when I get the monthly statement) I can get 20k or so flyer miles. Then cut up the card.
How many flyer miles do you need to get free airfare? How does the conversion work? If it is something like 100k miles to get a one way ticket, its not going to be worth it.
Is it 10k miles = $100 in plane tickets?

I would, personally, never put that much on a credit card.
The only credit card I would ever have would be one I could pay off at the end of each month.
Overall, if you can pay it off as you go, earning a mileage point for every dollar spent is a good deal. My husband and I used our frequent flier mileage to go to Australia in 2005.
To find out all about a specific airlines' program I would suggest visiting that airline's website.
Hope it works out for you. Happy trails! :hi:

But its a new subject so I wanted to get input from others who have waded through this stuff.
Each 1k miles is about $10 in ticket costs from what I've seen. I was wanting to go to California. A one way ticket is about $130 from where I am.
I really don't like the consumer lending industry and how predatory they can be. So I'm kindof wary. I am really not the kind of person at risk of going into debt (I paid off most of my student loans in 1 year of working, I really dislike being in debt) but figure if I can get a free plane ticket and then cut the card up, its worth looking into.
