I'm looking for suggestions on what new books our library should get. Keep in mind, I'm really not looking for anything political, Just nonpolitical adult and children's nonfiction and adult and young adult fiction. Mysteries, romance, and horror novels are pretty popular at this library.
Let's try to keep politcal works out of this thread, OK? If I wanted that, I'd be posting in GD.

1. super-light fluff mysteries |
|
the Mrs. Murphy series by Rita Mae Brown "and Sneaky Pie Brown"
A woman investigates mysteries in her small town, and her cat, Mrs. Murphy, and dog, Tucker, investigate too, independently. The animals - all the animals in the book, horses, possums, bobcats, birds, foxes, etc. - talk to each other and understand the humans. The animals are entertaining and snarky. Like I said, fluff - but fun.

why do libraries think they have to supply "airplane books"?
one day you'll be old and on a fixed income and you will be VERY VERY VERY fucking sad if all you have to read are crap like "sneaky pete" and "cat who" mysteries
if it's too "lightweight" it's competing with teevee and most people today do have teevee reception of some kind, i don't know how these "cat who" type novels get any play at all to be honest
get a mystery/thriller/gothic with some MEAT to it, hell, even stupid stephanie meyer's "host" has more meat than a "cat" themed mystery, me, i'd just point out that ruth rendell and joyce carol oates are still putting out really solid, really involving works -- there are many more
i thought romance had completely passed from fashion, no suggestions there, be aware that many used book stores have boxes and boxes of old romance novels for 25 cents a pop, so if you really want to help people read who can't afford to read, you are not helping anyone by providing genre romance because it's essentially free anyways

4. All the William Gibson books |
|
Also Spider Robinson, Tony Hillerman, and of course any Dick Francis you don't have already. Lois McMaster Bujold's "Miles Vorkosigan" books. Someof these may be listed as Science Fiction, but they are anything but Star Wars. And I'm fussy about wordcraft - read Gibson, and Dean Koontz just won't do it for ya no more.

You know your stuff! I volunteered in our library back east, and all the books you mentioned had high circulation.
You only forgot Sharyn McCrumb!
