1. Pink Floyd - Money
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFSlXldmoLo

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and your O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack.
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away

"HuHuh! I was in the right!"
"Yes, absolutely in the right!"
"I certainly was in the right!"
"You was definitely in the right. That geezer was cruising for a bruising!"
"Yeah!"
"Why does anyone do anything?"
"I don't know, I was really drunk at the time!"
"I was just telling him, he couldn't get into number 2. He was asking
why he wasn't coming up on freely, after I was yelling and
screaming and telling him why he wasn't coming up on freely.
It came as a heavy blow, but we sorted the matter out"

6. The Kingston Trio-Greenback Dollar
GREEN BACK DOLLAR
Some people say I'm a no 'count. Others say I'm no good.
But I'm just a nat'ral-born travelin' man, doin' what I think I should, O, yeah. Doin' what I think I should.

Chorus:
And I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar, spend it as fast as I can.
For a wailin' song and a good guitar, the only things that I understand, poor boy, the only things that I understand.

When I was a little baby, my momma said, "Hey, son. Travel where you will and grow to be a man
And sing what must be sung, poor boy. Sing what must be sung."

(Chorus)

Now that I'm a grown man, I've traveled here and there. I've learned that a bottle of brandy and a song,
The only ones who ever care, poor boy, the only ones who ever care.

(Chorus, repeat first verse and repeat chorus)

8. Gang of Four - Capital (It fails us now)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgJeTwZjZF0
The moment I was born I opened my eyes
I reached out for my credit card
I know I never did my own suit
Capital it fails us now come and let us seize the time x2
On the first day of my life I opened my eyes
Guess where with superstars surrounded by luxury-eagers
I need a prison I need a hot fire
No credit no goods
Come on back I say
They say we’re bankrupt
Capital it fails us now come and let us seize the time x2
Capital it fails us now…
Oh no! I left it in my other suit!
One day all will be living on credit
Bankrupt
I’m still in credit—just
One day all men are living on credit…

9. "Money" from Cabaret
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkRIbUT6u7Q

Money makes the world go around
The world go around
The world go around
Money makes the world go around
It makes the world go 'round.

A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound
A buck or a pound
Is all that makes the world go around,
That clinking clanking sound
Can make the world go 'round.

Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money

If you happen To be rich,
And you feel like a
Night's enetertainment
You can pay for a
Gay escapade.

If you happen To be rich,
And alone, and you
Need a companion
You can ring-ting-A-ling
for the maid.

If you happen To be rich
And you find you are
Left by your lover,
Though you moan and you groan
Quite a lot,
You can take it On the chin,
Call a cab, And begin
To recover
On your fourteen-Carat yacht.

Money makes the world go around,
The world go around,
The world go around,
Money makes the world go around,
Of that we can be sure.
(....) on being poor.

Money money money- money money money
Money money money- Money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

If you haven't any coal in the stove
And you freeze in the winter
And you curse on the wind
At your fate
When you haven't any shoes
On your feet
And your coat's thin as paper
And you look thirty pounds
Underweight.
When you go to get a word of advice
From the fat little pastor
He will tell you to love evermore.
But when hunger comes a rap,
Rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat at the window...

At the window...

Who's there?

Hunger!

Ooh, hunger!

See how love flies out the door...For

Money makes The world...
...Go around
The world...
...Go around
The world...
...Go around
Money makes the
The world...
...Go around

That clinking
Clanking sound of
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

Get a little,
Money money
Get a little,
Money money
Money money
Money money
Money money
Money money

Mark, a yen, a buck
Get a little
Or a pound
Get a little
That clinking clanking
Get a little
Get a little

Clinking sound

Money money
Money money...

Is all that makes
The world go 'round

Money money
Money money

It makes the world go round!

20. Do the lyrics of the Abba song at the beginning of this thread make sense?
Edited on Sat Jan-16-10 11:00 PM by Boojatta

I wouldn't have to work at all
I'd fool around and have a ball.

(...)

Aha, aha
all the things I could do
if I had a little money

"Fool around and have a ball" doesn't sound like much of a plan. What are "all the things" that she could do? She could do them if she had "a little money", so why does her plan require her to meet a man who is wealthy?

In my dreams I have a plan
if I got me a wealthy man
I wouldn't have to work at all
I'd fool around and have a ball.

Why wouldn't it be enough for him to have a somewhat above-average income or somewhat below-average personal expenses? Until there are specific plans, there's no way to estimate the cost of implementing the plans.

Some of the most interesting plans are capable of generating wealth. For such plans, investors might be needed, but there's no need for a supply of indefinite amounts of wealth to be simply squandered.

So I must leave, I'll have to go
to Las Vegas or Monaco
and win a fortune in a game

At this point, it seems that the song is an idiot's dream. She would most likely lose the little money that she has, playing against the house when the house is itself a profitable business that provides gambling entertainment rather than investment opportunities. However, "idiot's dream" would seem to be an inappropriate title because it would contrast with the upbeat mood of the song.

It's a good tune though, isn't it?

22. Randy Newman, "It's Money That Matters"...
...

Of all of the people that I used to know
Most never adjusted to the great big world
I see them lurking in book stores
Working for the Public Radio
Carrying their babies around in a sack on their back
Moving careful and slow

(Chorus)
It's money that matters
Hear what I say
It's money that matters
In the USA

All of these people are much brighter than I
In any fair system they would flourish and thrive
But they barely survive
They eke out a living and they barely survive

When I was a young boy, maybe thirteen
I took a hard look around me and asked what does it mean?
So I talked to my father, and he didn't know
And I talked to my friend and he didn't know
And I talked to my brother and he didn't know
And I talked to everybody that I knew

(Chorus)
It's money that matters
Now you know that it's true
It's money that matters
Whatever you do

Then I talked to a man lived up on the county line
I was washing his car with a friend of mine
He was a little fat guy in a red jumpsuit
I said "You look kind of funny"
He said "I know that I do"

"But I got a great big house on the hill here
And a great big blonde wife inside it
And a great big pool in my backyard and another great big pool
beside it
Sonny it's money that matters, hear what I say
It's money that matters in the USA
It's money that matters
Now you know that it's true
It's money that matters whatever you do"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgYPn2-aloo

FIRST I LOOK AT THE PURSE
(Written by : Smokey Robinson / Robert Rodgers)

The Contours
J. Geils Band

Some fellas look at the eyes
Some fellas look at the nose
Some fellas look at the size
Some fellas look at the clothes
I don't care if her eyes are red
I don't care if her nose is long
I don't care if she's underfed
I don't care if her clothes are worn
First I look at the purse!
Some fellas like the smiles they wear
Some fellas like the legs that's all
Some fellas like the style of their hair
Want their waist to be small.
I don't care if their legs are thin
I don't care if their teeth are big
I don't care if their hair's a wig
Why waste time lookin' at the waistline?
First I look at the purse!
A woman can be fat as can be,
kisses sweet as honey
But that don't mean a thing to me
If you ain't got no money
If the purse is fat....that's where it's at.
Some fellas like the way they walk
The way they swing and sway
Some fellas like the way they talk
Dig the things they say.
I don't care if they wobble like a...
or talk with a lisp
I still think I'm a good lover
if the dollar bills are crisp
First I look at the purse!
First I look at the purse!
First I look at the purse!
First I look at the purse!
I don't care if you got yourself a wrap
all I want is your pretty green cash
Bought me a suit, bought me a car
Want me to look like a hollywood star
Money, (Money!) I want money (Money!)
Baby, ain't no "why", baby (Money!)
I need money!
First I look at the purse!
First I look at the purse!
First I look at the purse!
First I look at the purse!

36. Taxman
George Harrison and the rest of Beatles singing Taxman.

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman,
yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold, I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Taxman

'Cause I'm the taxman,
yeah I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for
(ha ha Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more
(ha ha Mr. Heath)
'Cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'Cause I'm the taxman,
yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me.

37. Lap Of Luxury - Jethro Tull
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9W9ArKYNCo
The money won't last forever ---
rent man called twice today.
I hope some day you'll find me
in the lap of luxury.

Searched for a new apartment
but they don't grow on trees.
Just want to lay my head
in the lap of luxury.

Stepped out on a new horizon ---
felt a new spring in my feet.
Found a job, it could set me up
dangling in the lap of luxury.

And the gaffer is a man of substance ---
drives a jag and takes high tea.
Lives beyond the industrial wasteland,
laughing in the lap of luxury.

I need money, now, to soothe my heart!

Buy me a Datsun or Toyota ---
get the tax man to agree
all expenses I can muster
from the lap of luxury.

peace~

62. I wasn't going to respond, because I had nothing more to add, but
I see that I wrote "you're" instead of '"your."

Unbelievable.

Anyway, my take on the commercial is that they are playing to the rubes greed in the use of
'gimme some money' when, in fact, only AmEx , in the end, is gonna be gettin' some money.

And how.

If it's possible to do a double take at a commercial these days, that's what I did when I heard that one.

61. 'Do You Want My Job' by Little Village
Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 10:14 AM by tk2kewl
Cool breezes from the mountains blow
As I wake up and dress to go
On the island, dawn is breaking
In the harbor, tanker's waiting

From the land of the rising sun
They bring their old plutonium
And we unload it in the bay
For two dollars forty cents a day

Do you want my
Do you want my
Do you want my
Do you want my job

I hump the stuff, I take the cash
So my kids can wear Adidas
And if you live here, home, you know
We ain't got no place else to go

I remember when the air was sweet
And I brought home the fish to eat
Now we buy Spam from the grocery store
'Cause you can't eat the fish no more.

Do you want my
Do you want my
Do you want my
Do you want my job

65. Two songs from Bessie Smith, 1929
I've Got What it Takes

Stingy Jenny saved up all her pennies
Straight to the bank she would go
The sharks would hound her
and surround her
But none could get her dough

Jenny's fella
was a slick high yeller
Sent away to jail one day
He cried for bail
then turned real pale
When he heard Jenny say:

I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away
It's in demand
They wants it every day

I've been saving it up for a long long time
To give it away would be more than a crime
Your eyes may roll, your teeth may grit
None of my money will you git

You can look at my bank book
But I'll never let you feel my purse

'Cause I'm one woman, believes in safety first, safety first
Said if you want my money, here's my plan
I'm saving it up for a real good man
I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away

She said I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away
It's in demand
Folks cryin' for it every day

I've been saving it up for a long long time
To give it away would be more than a crime
Your eyes may roll, your teeth may grit
But none of this small change will you git

You can look at my bank book
But I'll never let you put your hands on my purse

Lord I'm a woman, believes in safety first, safety first
Say if you want my money, here's my plan
I'm not savin' it up for no snake-hipped man
I've got what it takes
But it breaks my heart to give it away

Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out

Once I lived the life of a millionaire
spending my money, I didn't care
I carried my friends out for a good time
drinkin' bootleg liquor, champagne and wine
Then I began to fall so low
I didn't have no friends, and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a dollar again
I'm gonna hold on to it till them eagles grin

Nobody knows you when you're down and out
In my pocket not one penny
and my friends I haven't any
But If I ever get on my feet again,
then I'll meet my long lost friends
It's mighty strange, without a doubt
Nobody knows you when you're down and out
I mean when you're down and out
Mmmmm, when you're down and out
mmmmm, not one penny
And my friends I haven't an,
mmmmm, well I felt so low
Nobody wants me round their door,
mmmmm, without a doubt
No man can use you when you're down and out
I mean when you're down and out
