I think I am going to toss all my old LPs

am I crazy? I really never play them. Why do we get so attached to those things? I've felt like tossing them before but then couldn't bring myself to do it. They range from the 70s through the 90s. :cry:

Has anyone else done this? Did you regret it afterwards?

1. If you don't want them anymore

Try taking them to a place that buys old records. You may make a little cash off of them.

2. just my opinion, hang on to 'em

you never know when something could end up being a "collectible"( but only if they're in really good condition including the covers), and really worth some bucks way down the road...(or are already). Unless you have limited space, or move a lot and are tired of lugging them around ( if you have hundreds, like I do, or even thousands like some people I know), seems easy enough to just keep them around. Of course, only you know what records they are, and what condition etc, but there are collectors out there who sometimes are looking for odd or obscure vinyl that you'd never think was worth anything. If you are short of space etc,and just really want to get rid of em now, then I still would agree with Sky Masterson's idea.

3. A few years ago...

part of our collection (60s-80s) was ruined. We salvaged some of the ones we really loved. We still have quite a few left. My 18yo son plays them sometimes.
In some ways it was nice to have this choice made for us! My husband somehow put most of the music on the computer, so it's still like having them, just without the space they took up!
I wouldn't have thrown them away if they had not been ruined. If you are thinking of just tossing them, put them up on craigslist or something. It might make an old collector happy, and it would keep the records out of the landfill.

5. We are in the process of

converting ours to CDs via a USB turntable.

But I still plan on keeping the originals--they don't take up too much room in the basement!

even tho we have most of them on CD now, I do not think I will ever get rid of them.

8. I still have all of mine.

I've converted many to CD and MP3. My daughter uses some of them as decorations. Vinyl pinned to the ceiling and covers on the walls.

9. I suggest you hang on to them till the economy comes back - prices are

very low right now, and I am sure they will be a lot better in a year or two.....You probably have several very good ones even now, but remember - condition is everything. Sell them in 2012 or so.

I just read a nice news feature about a woman who makes a living selling old LPs from her home. She got her stash by buying 2000 LPs at a garage sale. That started a daily business for her, from home. She sells on the Internet, of course.

Don't just dump them. If you must get rid of them, sell the lot.

16. Vinyl has made something of a comeback

Some recording artists, indie bands and others, still release albums on vinyl, and I've heard that it's even increasingly popular to do so. A lot of people prefer the "warmer" sound of LPs vs. CDs. There's also a big collectors market in old LPs, depending on their rarity and condition. I just got a turntable that can convert LPs to digital files via a USB connection, and I'm having fun listening to albums I haven't been able to play for many years. I think you should keep any that you're fond of.

17. First, convert them to MP3's for recording to you hard drive or CD's

second, check each album's title on EBay. AFTER you've converted the music. Save only the most valuable. Third, put them in a box for a garage sale if they aren't worth anything on EBay.

At least that's what I did. I wound up throwing a couple of hundred albums in the dumpster when no one bought them at consecutive garage sales.


I sold one of two of my original unopened, unplayed, sealed copies of Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors on EBay for a LOT of money a few years back ( I worked at Sam Goodies in the 70's). Worth the look.

I prefer LPs to CDs. I like the sound better, they're usually cheaper, and it's the way many bands originally intended for their music to be played.

I have about 200 LPs. If you really want to get rid of them, send them to me! I'll even chip in some cash for the trouble!

20. I heard vinyl is coming back in vogue

Audiophiles prefer the analog sound of the LP to the digital MP3 or CD. If you don't want your LP's, I suggest you either hang on to your vinyl or sell it to collectors on Ebay--but only after you get digital music conversion hardware and software to keep your tunes.

the consensus seems to be keep them or make them mp3s which I have considered too. I'll consider a lot of your replies. I appreciate your input. We all really are attached to them, aren't we? I guess it's part of our history, that's what's stopped me from tossing them in the past. Memories.

22. Dump them to CD first

You can get a USB turntable fairly cheap or maybe even borrow one from a friend.

I've got one sitting on my desk waiting for me to actually get around to doing it. I've got a bunch of albums that never made it to CD or are personal recordings.
