Dog owners: Scout had to go to the emergency vet today

because she was squinting one eye...the doc gave us atropine drops, and then some antibiotic ointment to use about 5 to 10 minutes later.

We just did both, and she is acting very melodramatic...snuggling, holding her eye shut...

She's a 14 pound jack mix...5 years old.

Is the drama normal? She was acting normal before we put the stuff in her eye.

8. she gets a cookie for taking a big poop outside

we started it years ago as a reward...now when she comes in she stares at us..."where's my damned poop cookie?"

Unfortunately, often it's a tinkle cookie...but, no point in getting into that.

4. atropine has side effects

many drops burn upon instillation, also it dilates the pupil and can make one photophobic ( keep lights down low). In large doses it can make one 'mad as a hatter, dry as a bone, and red as a beet'

5. The drama is VERY NATURAL for a Jack Russell.

OMG, my Jack Russell is the most dramatic animal I have ever owned.

Hope the eye is okay, just baby Scout, she deserves it, if you don't believe her just ask her.

13. Does she sleep in your bed?

If so, look to her to just roll over and whimper when you tell her it is time to go to bed.

She will expect you to pick her up and carry her to bed, she is sick after all.

10. The ointment will likely cloud or distort her vision in the affected eye.

The strange sensation probably contributes to the drama. I speak from personal experience with eye ointment.

11. I hate that she has to have this junk

in her little doggie eyes-- it looks nasty.

14. Be glad such things exist. There are a lot of meds and procedures for animals

that are pretty recent. She will get over it and be better.

12. Just going to the vet can be traumatic for some dogs...

My sweet little Sara loved going for rides in the car, but as soon as we pulled into the vet's, she would start shaking, and usually relieved herself in front of the desk... They just loved her there, always made a big fuss, but she was rescue, so I don't know what her previous experiences were... :-(

And any medication can have side effects. You could call the vet and ask about it... But right now she probably will benefit from your attention. That's what I do... :-)
