Avatar took a MONTH to reach $500 MILLION (domestic)!!
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/fastest.htm?page=500&p=.htm

It took the Dark Knight 45 days and Titanic 98 days.

Avatar should pass Titanic as the all-time highest grossing movie, domestic AND world-wide in the next two weeks!!

I saw Avatar for the 2nd time on saturday, this time in IMAX 3D. This was in baltimore, at the same time the Ravens were playing the Colts in the Divisional round of the playoffs, and yet the theater was still packed.

Yes, the plot is terribly cliche, but the 3D effects are incredible. Damned if James Cameron isn't a fricking genius. Make a movie combining all the most popular plot cliches and add in the best special effects ever seen and watch it become the highest grossing movie of all time.

1. how many more movie screens than ten years ago? plus tickets were cheaper ten years ago too
money should not be a qualifier to see how "good" a movie is and how much better it is than others.

2. adjusted for inflation, it's 34th all-time
Gone with the Wind is the far and away leader. It also helps that it's being seen on 3D, 2D, and IMAX 3D screens. The prices for Avatar range from $9 for 2D to $14 for IMAX 3D. So yeah, you have to take that all into account, I'm just saying it's damn impressive to reach the half BILLION mark domestic in a month. World-wide, it could reach the TWO BILLION dollar mark in a month. :wow:

3. The more money I keep hearing it makes the less I want to see it.
I also dont think a movie should win the best picture award just cause it has awesome special effects.

9. I know people who vote like that.
They will vote Democratic until our candidate has a chance of winning, then they'll claim he's too popular and will vote for a third party candidate.

It's more harmless with movies. :) Still, I don't let other people tell me what to think like that. If I like or dislike something, or want or don't want to see something, it's based on what I think of it, not what the masses do.

11. Its probably an ok flick
But when people wont shut up about it and act like James Cameron is some kind of progressive Jesus for making it then it kind of turns me off to wanting to go see it. There is such a thing as Over-hyping something to death.

12. That's just other people talking.
It has nothing to do with the movie or Cameron.

6. I went and saw Avatar for the same reason I watch Wong Kar Wai's arthouse movies or Zhang Yimou's
They both use Christopher Doyle as their cinematographer and I know it is going to be visually stunning. Kar Wai's movies are usually over pretentious and full of themselves and Yimou's are going to have fascist/totalitarian overtones but damn they are beautiful! I am not saying Avatar is on that level but damn it was beautiful and I could appreciate the work that went into making it visually beautiful

here is the plot of Avatar as compared to Dune

15. Too bad the plot and writing are both complete crap.
Does everyone think that a giant CGI-fest will make a movie great? Christ on a cracker.

A better story without the special effects splurge is Dances With Wolves...no wait, Pocahontas...no wait, Ferngully...

If I wanted to see one-dimensional characters, expensive CGI, nonsensical plots and bad acting, I'd go watch the Star Wars prequels again.

16. hmmm
Gee, a movie that puts "style and flash" over "intelligence and depth" is super popular.

And we wonder why people don't give a rat fuck about real issues in politics....
