How did I miss these guys? The Flaming Lips?
I heard Yoshimi - thought it was OK, but nothing special. Then fast foward a few years, and Pitchfork tells me I must buy Embryonic. So I do. WOW. How did THEY know what the soundtrack to my subconsious sounds like???

Replaying Yoshimi, and again, WOW - how did I miss this album? How did I not see the brilliance of "All we have is now"?

How did I not know what a masterpiece Soft Bulletin is?

1. I guess a lot of people like them
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 02:14 PM by Kali
Unfortunately for me one of those people has a daily show on my community station and they play them WAY TOO OFTEN.

Just one of those bands that for some reason GRATES ON MY LAST NERVE.:puke:

The other is poly-fucking-phonic spray:puke: :puke: :puke:

2. They both have similar vocalists
IN style that is - a sort of nasal and high pitched sound.

I usually don't like that style (not a fan of RUSH or YES) but it works for me with the FL...

3. I have a love/hate relationship with Pitchfork
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 02:16 PM by EndersDame
I will pay attention if they say an album is good but wont disregard one if they deem it uncool. I think these guys really know their shit but need to remember that there should be love joy and fun associated with music.

I like the Flaming Lips you should check out their documentary The Fearless Freaks

I thought you might like their latest album seemed up your alley but thought you probably heard it by now :)

6. I agree 100% - and they really hate retro, which I love
Edited on Mon Jan-18-10 02:20 PM by Taverner
For them, retro is a one trick pony. I disagree, and think many of the styles from the 60's, 70's and 80's can be brought back and still have originality.

But usually if they rave about an album, its good.

The first time I heard Eno's Warm Jets it sounded like a new modern band!

11. Hehehe Eno is sort of new to me too
I didn't really get into Eno until a few years ago. And I'm almost 40!

5. I just discovered them recently as well
I never listened to them because of their name. I always assumed they were a metal or punk band. Boy was I wrong. They're supposed to be greta live.

7. That's what I heard - I heart its like the old P Funk Shows
Spaceships landing on stage, hundred or so people on stage, some in animal costumes, extremely psychadelic.

9. Here's my favorite Flaming Lips video -Do You Realise?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zYOKFjpm9s

One, two, three, four -
Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize - we're floating in space -
Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun don'-go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - Oh - Oh - Oh
Do You Realize - that everyone you know
Someday will die -

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun don'-go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize

12. The Soft Bulletin was easily the best album of the 90's
And it wasn't even close.

13. I'd say it was ONE of the best albums, but the 90's gave us SO MANY great album
For example

Nirvana - Bleach
Screaming Trees - Uncle Anethsisia
Pearl Jam - Yield, Vs and Vitalogy
Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk
Phish - Hoist
Rage against the Machine - Battle for LA, Evil Empire

and this is just off the top of my head...

17. The only one on your list that would compete, for me personally, would be Tigermilk.
But then I'm not much of a grunge guy.

Still think SB beats em all.

18. OK then, how about:
Radiohead - The Bends, OK Computer
Beck - Odelay
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, Painful
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head

?

I argue that almost every decade has good music, you just have to know where to find it....

22. I don't disagree that every decade has great music.
But only one album can be the best of the decade. Or more appropriately one's favorite album of the decade.

SB is mine for the 90's by far.

That Yo La Tengo record is fantastic, btw.

I personally HATE Radiohead with a passion so they don't rank too highly for me.

24. Hey I LOVE Radiohead, but that's me
Everyone has their own style that they feel at home with. Radiohead is that for me. That and Flaming Lips seem like the soundtrack to my subconsious.

For me, the 90's will always be defined by either Screaming Trees' "Uncle Anesthesia" or "Sweet Oblivion"

But everyone had a different 90's

15. Best of the 2000's even!
Although some of their other albums are serious contenders too...Yoshimi for example.

I can't believe these guys have been out this long, and I never really gave them a fair chance!
