There'll Always Be A Scotland Dept: "Haggis Producers Struggling to Keep Up With Demand"
The Robert Burns festival and all:

http://deadlinescotland.wordpress.com/2010/01/22/haggis-producers-struggling-to-keep-up-with-demand-2537/

HAGGIS producers are working round the clock to meet demand for this Burns Night on Monday.
World famous Edinburgh firm Macsween say they have seen a sharp rise in sales of the traditional dish, claiming it has been a record year for both the meat and vegetarian varieties.

Sales have risen 25 per cent, with the most noticeable rise in England.

Meat producers Malcolm Allan have seen a staggering 2000 per cent rise in the sale of the delicacy this year.
They have also secured a contract with Tesco to supply 25,000 haggis to their English stores as more and more people embrace the dish made from meat off-cuts and traditionally wrapped in sheep’s stomach.

1. Vegetarian haggis!!!!!!
.
William Wallace must be spinning like a top.
.
.
Although...
.
I love chorizo... at least I did until I read the actual full list
of ingredients of all the parts that go into that.
.
Not a vegetarian and really dislike most veggie "meats", but fortunately
vegetarian chorizo is EXCELLENT.
.

2. So, my relative, Robert The Bruce.
But, really, if it's vegetarian, is it haggis?

3. Know what you mean about Chorizo
I read the ingredients now, and if I see "lymph nodes", back into the refrigerated case it goes. I think that's only Mexican chorizo though.

4. Isn't "vegetarian haggis" like "vegan turducken"--a contradiction?
Haggis is only like the second least vegan food in the world.

9. Someone's going to have to use BBC 'Special' English to explain vegetarian haggis to me.
No, I don't 'get' it either.

14. Depends on how one defines 'least vegan' I suppose
In many ways it's one of the nearest to vegan.

Veganism is about minimising the impact of our food consumption on animals, by eating the whole of an animal (at least the whole of its edible parts) one is closer along that spectrum than confining oneself to certain cuts of meat.

5. Is it cheaper than your usual cuts of beef?
...in this economy, that might explain it.

7. It's not "beef". It's lamb, but not really lamb. More like lamb "things".
.
From Wikipedia: Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'pluck' (heart,
liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt,
mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach f
or approximately three hours... ...Haggis may not be imported into the
USA from the UK since the BSE crisis of 1989. This is due to haggis'
offal ingredients such as sheep lungs... ...Haggis is used in a sport
called haggis hurling, which involves throwing a haggis as far as possible.
MiddleFingerMom believes this is the only legitimate use of haggis.
.
Awful, that offal.
.
Haggis Haiku.
.
Pluck and tripe and paunch,
even Amish would throw out.
Scotland serenades.

haggis will write to you once-a-month).

6. Address To A Haggis.
Address To A Haggis.

1.
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.
2.
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hudies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.
3.
His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An' cut ye up wi' ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reeking, rich!
4.
Then horn for horn, they stretch an' strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
'Bethankit!' hums.
5.
Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect scunner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
On sic a dinner?
6.
Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As fecl;ess as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit;
Tho' bluidy flood or field to dash,
O how unfit.
7.
But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll make it whistle;
An' legs, an' arms, an' heads will sned
Like taps o' thrissle.
8.
Ye pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware,
That jaups in luggies;
But if ye wish her gratfu' prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

Standard English Translation

Fair full your honest, jolly face,
Great chieftain of the sausage race!
Above them all you take your place,
Stomach, tripe, or intestines:
Well are you worthy of a grace
As long as my arm.

The groaning trencher there you fill,
Your buttocks like a distant hill,
Your pin would help to mend a mill
In time of need,
While through your pores the dews distill
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour wipe,
And cut you up with ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like any ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm steaming, rich!

Then spoon for spoon, the stretch and strive:
Devil take the hindmost, on they drive,
Till all their well swollen bellies by-and-by
Are bent like drums;
Then old Master of the house, most like to burst,
'The grace!' hums.

Is there that over his French ragout,
Or olio that would sicken a sow,
Or fricassee would make her throw-up
With perfect disgust,
Looks down with sneering, scornful view
On such a dinner?

Poor devil! see him over his trash,
As feeble as a withered rush,
His thin legs a good whip-lash,
His fist a nut;
Through bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit.

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his ample fist a blade,
He will make it whistle;
And legs, and arms, and heads will crop
Like tops of thistle.

You powers, who make mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill of fare,
Old Scotland want no watery ware,
That splashes in small wooden dishes;
But is you wish her grateful prayer,
Give her a Haggis!
