1. I use Firefox

One time I was using a friend's computer, he had Google Chrome as a browser and that was pretty neat. I don't know enough about it so I voted Firefox.

6. Decade? Been using it almost 20 years since 3.x, but the noobs all think they're so cool...

to find Firefox. None of them struggled through the original IE versions, or Netscape. Ask them about Mosaic on Compuserve. Or that lame browser AOL stuck everyone with. (They didn't tell you back then that you could use your own browser after you connected.)

It's the Linux dweebs. Once it was IE and its shells or Netscape but the cooler DOS geeks all talked up Opera as the best alternative, but now the Linux dweebs are all over the place trying to shove Ubuntu down our throats. Firefox is as far as they get.

I remember the early days of IE and what about Netscape 4.76? The worst version of any browser ever! It's almost like they designed its primary feature to be the crash! :o

Mosaic was pretty decent for a browser in the early days. Then again, there wasn't much to find online. Most sites were text-based, very little in the way of graphics. It was truly informational instead of info- and e-media-tainment as with today.

they just consider it inferior. So do I...it's just not something I want to use. It's better than Safari at least...Safari is the balls' arse, I'm truly shocked it hasn't killed Apple as a corporation that their browser is the digital equivalent of shit on your doorstep.

There's one reason, and one reason only, that I don;t currently use it (even though I DO have the most current version installed)...

...and that's RoboForm.

I need to remember a LOT of User IDs and Passwords...for myself and my clients...and without RoboForm, I'd have to look them up every time I needed them.

YES, Opera has the "Magic Wand," but it's not as versatile as RoboForm.

Also, FireFox has the "Better Privacy" plugin, which kills Flash Cookies. Even Firefox's "delete all current history" feature doesn't do that.

It's not the idea that Opera isn;t a good browser.

It's just that Firefox offers more, even if it does have its own set of issues (like terrible, erratic handling of PDF files).

32. I found Firefox has a bigger learning curve.

It's fine if all you know is IE, but I've been using Opera for about a decade now, including when you had to pay for it, at a time when everyone else made theirs free. For me, there was nothing "intuitive" about the commands, and I absolutely hate having to edit ini-files just to install features I take for granted in Opera. Maybe they don't require that now, but I don't have to do that ever with Opera.

If you're into mega-features, go look at the Opera forums and widgets. I know a lot of people rave about all these features the browsers use, be it Firefox, Opera, Safari, Mozilla or whatever, but my needs don't include most of them. I will likely use Opera until no one uses them, simply because I like it best, and will continue to suggest them over Firefox. I don't expect many people to heed my suggestions, but I'm used to that ;)

I WAS using Firefox. It kept STALLING OUT...On my Windows Task Manager it would always say

Firefox: Not RESPONDING

I have gone to google and searched for any KIND of a FIX for this, and have tried all sorts of things, and it still stalls out.

Maybe its my computer. I have switched back and forth between
Internet Explorer and FF.. and IE seems to be not stalling out as much.


My friends have suggested I try GOOGLE CHROME, but it will not download into my computer. I have tried to meet the requirements of that, and it won't take it.


The Programing for this computer is WINDOWS XP 1989-2001. I need a new computer badly, and hope to get one soon. I can't stand this stalling out.. it makes me want to scream, and toss my computer into the deepest depths of the Ocean so it will implode into tiny pieces or ..off a ten story building where it will explode into tiny pieces!! arrrrrrrrrgh!!!! :argh: :grr:

16. I have two suggestions for you

First, get this:

Install it and then in the "Cleaner" section, have it Analyze and clean under both the "Windows" and "Applications" tabs. Me, I tick all the boxes under those tabs but some boxes are un-ticked by default and you probably should leave them that way initially.

Then click the "Issues" section on the left. Leave the default boxes un-ticked if you desire - I tick them all. Hit the "Scan for Issues" button and once that's done, click the "Fix Selected Issues" button. The program will ask you if you want to save your settings and asks you where you want to save them. I save mine in the program's directory. Save and then you get a dialogue window that has you get rid of the issues.

Keep in mind that once you're done, your cookies will be gone as well as histories of sites you've visited (not bookmarks - bookmarks are forever). You'll have to re-enter passwords on sites that require a login so, write them down now in case you don't have them committed to file or memory.

CCleaner gets rid of a whole lot of B.S. and may just solve your problems.

If not, them comes step two:

In all likelihood, the problem with your computer has to do with some stupid startup program or browser hijacker that came courtesy of who knows what software or auto-installing piece of malware crap. It doesn't matter how the crap got there but it's probably there. I use of battery of programs to combat this:

Hijackthis looks for browser helper objects (BHO) that take over your browser. It also looks for other bad stuff but you need to be careful using it. Do a scan-only operation and read what comes up very carefully before deleting anything. Try performing a Google search on the names of stuff that comes up in the scan.

SpywareBlaster is dead simple. You set it to protect everything and exit the program. Every so often, manually click the UPDATE button and download the latest data from the site - that way you can protect your browsers without having to pay for the software

WinPatrol is a sweetheart of a program. It mainly monitors for changes to your startup files and existing programs and when something comes up, the little dog goes "woof" and asks you if you want to accept the changes. You can also go into the program and inspect the stuff already residing in your startup files and disable stuff that messes with your computing experience.

AdAware is another spyware checker/deleter thingy. There are a lot of those like MalwareBytes and others. I Use it because different anti-spyware programs find different things and it's good to have all bases covered.

BONUS: This is a powerful system tweaker and using it is serious business. They charge $$$ for this program now so don't do any upgrading:

On my Mac, I use Safari when I want to search for a string of text in the current web page, using the same squiggle-F key combination that searches for file names under the Finder. But Firefox gives me more control over what happens when I click on a .pdf file. Firefox also knows how to display MathML equations.

On my WinTel machine, I use Netscape and Firefox. For some reason, Firefox can't import my bookmarks from Netscape on that machine. I probably messed it up when I destroyed IE, which was fucked up by the manufacturer (Dell) and stayed fucked up after I downloaded a newer version. IE sucks anyway, but the Dell version really sucked.

(Yes, you can get rid of IE under Windows 7, although Microsuck wants you think that IE is an integral part of the operating system.)

Just got fed up with IE... and I like that Firefox has a built in spellchecker(and with my atrocious spelling, I sure need one!)
I've heard a lot about Google Chrome, though, and have been thinking of trying it out.. anyone know of the pros/cons of Chrome vs. Firefox?

I still remember when I was reluctant to change though. I used to think IE was the end all be all of browsers. Before that it was America Online LMAO.

My mom still uses IE. She doesn't understand what a browser even is. She thinks the internet is "MAG-IIK".

The first widespread attack to leverage a recently patched flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser has surfaced.

Starting late Wednesday, researchers at antivirus vendor Symantec's Security Response group began spotting dozens of Web sites that contain the Internet Explorer attack, which works reliably on the IE 6 browser, running on Windows XP. The attack installs a Trojan horse program that is able to bypass some security products and then give hackers access to the system, said Joshua Talbot, a security intelligence manager with Symantec.

Once it has infected a PC, the Trojan sends a notification e-mail to the attackers, using a U.S.-based, free e-mail service that Symantec declined to name.

As of midday Thursday, Symantec had spotted hundreds of Web sites that hosted the attack code, typically on free Web-hosting services or domains that the attackers had registered themselves.
