I just spent WAY too much on bedroom curtains
x(

It was one of those things where I bookmarked the home furnishings site, looked at the price, thought it was too much, bailed...went back...and back...and back...even went so far as to put the items in my shopping cart and started to check out...bailed...

And finally tonight I bit the bullet and fired up the charge card, because I knew I wouldn't be able to find exactly what I wanted anywhere else. (For the record, dusty lavender cotton sheers--I'm completely redoing the master bedroom.) (Oh--and although I am quite handy with the sewing machine, I realize I don't have the time or the patience at the moment to make six 84" curtains--it was a mental health decision. ;) )

So--enquiring minds want to know--have you ever spent way too much for an online purchase? And was it worth it in the long run, or did you just end up regretting it?

1. I probably have, but tend to quickly forget, saving me the headache later
;)

By the way, how hard are curtains to make? I haven't looked at any in a long time, but aren't they really nothing more than a wide hem through which you can fit a curtain rod? Unless you're making pleats, I wouldn't think it would be that much work ;)

4. well, they might be tab tops
or have valances or something fancy.

Or maybe they are a fabric that would be hard for an everyday sewing machine to handle.

5. True on all points.
I don't know what "valences" are, though, other than atomic numbers on the periodic table having to do with its charge ;)

The only sewing machine work I've ever done was upholstery work on massage tables :)

6. valances are those things that go over top the curtains
sometimes they are square, sometimes kind of swaggy if you know what I mean.

9. Okay, I see now.
And now I'm curious how that word got used on curtains. I've only ever known its use for chemistry :)

8. The reason I feel guilty
Is these are straight-on rod-pocket types. No frou frou whatsoever. x(

7. The wonders of the charge card
It just blends into the (*cough* hefty *cough*) balance that never, ever seems to go down (gee I wonder why) and I don't have to think about it as an individual cost of any sort. :P

I have made curtains before, and my biggest problem is getting them all the same length (I'm talking floor-length ones here). For some reason the last sets I made were all over the map in that regard, no matter how many times I measured and remeasured them. It was quite a pain. After those three pairs, I pretty much decided to quit the window treatment biz.

12. I can see where that would be a problem
:P

Then again, my woodworking skills are crap! No matter how many times I measure, remeasure and even write notes on the board ("Cut on THIS side!") invariably, I make one such cut on the wrong side, messing it all up.

I never had that kind of problem with the upholstery, though. We had a decent set of patterns for all the different table sizes and the carrying case. I still had to practice, but it wasn't too difficult :)

2. I bet we all have.
The way I look at it is if I plan on keeping them for more than a couple of years, I just divide the cost per year. So maybe $20 (or whatever) a year is not THAT bad. And if I really love them it's worth it.

10. I like that idea
I do tend to use and reuse things like curtains for many years--if we move, I put up whatever curtains I own in a different room for a different "look", etc.--and I plan on using these for as many years as I remain enchanted with my chosen color scheme (dusty lavender, deep green, and pale silver-grey) in this bedroom.

In my defense :D I did look around the intertubes and in several bricks-and-mortar stores for something similar, but I haven't found anything like them anywhere else. That's what made me take the plunge.

13. I spent over a hundred dollars on material to make a shower curtain. I still have it and love it 20
years later. I lent it to a friend and she liked it too and tried to trade it for something like a computer monitor and I was like "no way - some day I want my shower curtain back". She pushed back. I pushed back. Years later it was returned to me right when I needed it.

May the rest of us know what material you used in its construction? :)

17. It was a chintz (floral pattern) that cost about $40 a yard. Of course I use
a plastic liner with it. I like it. I only wish I had the money to sew chintz curtains and such these days but I don't.

Well, you've got me beat. I spent $178 but it was for three pairs of curtains. I only hope I can use these for 20 years as well! :hi:

21. I knew a lady who changed her curtains every spring and every fall. She had two sets.
Made for nice variety.

20. Just call them "drapes" and they'll seem like a bargain!
And, yes, I've spent too much on something for the house but end up happy and lovin' it. Life is short.
Wake up and smile!

22. I bought an Egyption saddle. From Egypt. On E-bay.
it wasn't really too much money for what it is and it got here really fast, but - I mean it's kind of large for a knick knack, ya know?

I'm not going to use it on a horse so it sits in the living room.

23. I hardly buy anything online.
Except airfare. Which is well worth it whatever it costs, considering that I only fly places that are WAY too far to drive.

Edited on Wed Jan-27-10 01:08 AM by Skittles
you wanted it and you thought long and hard about it before you did it so in my mind that makes you deserve it, regardless of cost; yes INDEED (I *AM* referring to curtains my dear :D)

25. It depends on how much you like them when you get them
If they are just exactly what you want when you get them in your hands, then it's fine. I've never bought anything but jewelry, books, toys and DVDs on the web. Most of the jewelry was just fine and the books and other stuff are fine of course. Jewelry that wasn't as expected was sent back. I think I got steals on everything so I've never overpaid on the web. Curtains, anything cloth... I have to feel the stuff which means i have to buy in person.
