Poll question: Help me pick the next TV series I watch on DVD.
Now that I am done with Big Love, I need suggestions. I have seen nothing, so any suggestions are welcome. Current choices based on friend recommendations.

1. Weeds.
It was my third or fourth choice (after Lost, BSG, and something else I don't think I got through) but it turned out to be the most entertaining.

4. I got bored at around season 3 of Weeds and stopped
watching. Maybe I should try to re-watch. I liked "Breaking Bad", the one about the teacher in New Mexico who started a meth lab to raise extra cash. The Wire IS the best, btw.

6. I'm actually very interested in Breaking Bad
However I have 52 movie slots(down from 120) left on my Netflix so I'm holding back adding anything else.

I think season 3 kind of fell off but it has an interesting cliff hanger and season 4 really kicks it back up. Very entertaining, in fact on the DVD commentary the makers said they really needed to make a change and shake things up. I've yet to see Season 5 but I'm looking forward to it.

7. I will go back and re-watch Weeds because it totally amused me
and i often thought it was my mood at the time more than the show itself when i lost interest. I find many of these series online streaming to watch usually though the quality may not be up to par for many. Breaking Bad only had two seasons and the season finale of the last season was a major cliff hanger and i have NO IDEA when season 3 begins. Perhaps I will google to see if there is a date after i finish this post.

another series I enjoyed though it was a bit brutal was OZ. I never knew before I watched it that Edie Falco played a prison guard in it before she was Carmella in the Sopranos.

Like the ending of season 1 features the son with all the cannabis in the car being pulled over with the mom in a Mexican stand-off because all the cannabis is gone.

12. Yeah that was silly but (spoiler)
But the last episode of the last season I saw had the younger kid (who became a moody turd) kill that lady who was causing problems for his mom with a golf club. Just out of nowhere he smacks her upside the head with a golf club and she falls into a pool then it ends.

36. Yes, I ordered both volumes from Amazon UK about a year ago
Lots of fun for someone who actually remembers 1973 and with an intriguing story line and well-drawn characters.

(The character who was played by Harvey Keitel in the U.S. version is played by Philip Glenister in the British original, and he is one of the most hilariously raunchy and politically incorrect characters ever, even surpassing Archie Bunker. Sam Tyler is played by John Simm, who more recently played The Master in Dr. Who.)

13. Definitely The Wire.
Edited on Wed Jan-27-10 05:33 PM by SteppingRazor
First, I'm a fan of all these shows, but The Wire is possibly the greatest show in the history of TV.

Second, The Wire is the only one of your options that is now off the air, so if you get into it now, you can watch every episode without having to wait for more episodes to come out.

On edit: Errr ... of course The West Wing is also off the air. My bad.

15. I have to say that I put The Wire in my queue but began asking
people for recommendations and started second guessing. I have seen two episodes during a promotion on HBO. I really liked it.

Based on all of these recommendations, however, my queue is swelling. I think I will start a comedy simultaneously.

17. The Wire shows a bleak picture of our society,
so a comedy might be a good idea as a counterpoint.

(Not bad mouthing the series. I agree it well may be the best series ever broadcast.)

.....No, I don't have Torrett's. That's the actual dialogue in a scene, and it actually is pulled off in a stroke of genius.

43. Second that!
An amazing show.

There are only five seasons, with 12-13 episodes each, so it's not really a long term commitment.

I concur that it is easily one of the best shows ever made. Stories, writing, characters and acting are supurb.

but you're right about Six Feet Under...fantastic. A friend bought the box set, and we watched them almost every time we got together...I think we watched five or six episodes in one day. So sad when it was over!

I was heart-broken when they canceled it. I just wish they hadn't tried to force that relationship between Gary and Kristy Swanson's character. TV writers always do stupid things like that.

33. MI-5, definitely
Only don't get too attached to any character. One of the factors that makes this show interesting is that you really don't know whether the characters will make it out of their sticky situation alive or with their reputations intact.

50. I know! I couldn't help myself and read ahead for the plot synopsis for
seasons 7 and 8. I can't stand how they have already aired both seasons and you can't get them here yet. Season 7 introduces Richard Armitage to MI5. He's dreamy. :)

I held a grudge until season 5 for how they handled Tom.
