7. This week's email from local "wine shop"
"Drinking Outside the Box

The Domaine de Guintrandy Cotes du Rhone 2008 comes in a 3 liter box, the equivalent of 4 bottles of wine.

Wine in a box sounds like the Walmartinizing of wine, but it really isn't.

At the Wine Expo this weekend, Julie and I sat in on a lecture by Jean-Charles Boisset, (left) owner of Boisset Family Estates, an international wine holding conglomerate. His message? The world needs to do a better job delivering wine more cost effectively. By doing so, wine costs will drop and negative environmental impact will diminish.

I think we are a long ways away from seeing "Lafite" poured from a tetra-pak, but in reality, it's not about the vessel - it's about the wine. How long ago did we think screw caps were meant for cheap plonk?

A box is very compact, much lighter and easier to store -- and opened wine will stay fresh for about a month."

This is from wine shop I can't afford to frequent...

9. Target's boxed red table wine is decent
I haven't had any of their varietals, but the blend was okay. Banrock Station's boxed wines are okay, too.

10. NPR's Lynn Rosetto Casper had an segment a few years back on boxed wine...
and this was the top recommended box wine. For an everyday table wine its fine.

11. When I was a bachelor, a plate of pasta, a glass of red wine from a box, and "The Godfather",
were a cheap evening's entertainment. Never had a problem with the quality of the wine, but I'm strictly a bottle guy now...

13. I used to sell wines by the case via private wine tastings back in the early 80's...
Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 08:48 PM by A HERETIC I AM
and learned a whole lot about wine while doing so.

One of the biggest enemies - krypton, if you will - of wine is oxygen. The wine in those boxes is inside a plastic bag that allows no air to enter as you dispense the wine, unlike a bottle.

Sure, it isn't fine vintage stuff you can lay down for a half century or so, but for the average drinker, box wine is perfectly fine and completely utilitarian. You can buy it in January and have a delightful glassful in March.

Try doing that with a bottle of your favorite.

The idea is a wonderful one and works very well.

18. There was a time when I thought keeping a box around would allow me to drink
one or maybe two glasses on occasion without having to open a whole bottle. However, the serving size rapidly morphed into 'a box'...

:)

19. It actually isn't that bad, stays fresh a long time, and is less expensive.
You're not going to find anything comparable to a Kendall-Jackson in quality or flavor, but if you're making wine coolers there's nothing better than a boxed wine. The pour spout valve thingie makes it really convenient.
