Man asks volunteers to carry him up Manhattan for 9.4 miles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi4ClspNrNs&feature=player_embedded

Mark Malkoff says: "I just released a new video entitled, "Man Carried 9.4 Miles by Strangers in NYC". In it I set out to disprove the myth that New York is unfriendly by attempting to transport myself from the southern most end of Manhattan as far north possible only by having people on the street physically carry me along the way. I ended up being carried 9.4 miles from the entrance of the Staten Island Ferry to 141st St & Broadway by 155 different people. The footage is quite incredible!"

1. 141st and Broadway - that's my old neighborhood!
And yes, New Yorkers are actually very friendly and considerate. They're just a little edgy most times, but when called to it, they are wonderful.

2. When I was going to college I was commuting from NJ to NYC
during that time I injured my knee and was on crutches for a period of time. I found that on the Subway someone was always willing to give up a seat for me. On the Path Trains from NJ to NY, on the other hand, no one was willing to be so helpful.

4. AMTRAK traveling alone and coming south into Philadelphia...
.
...I was on crutches (full leg cast) and trying to balance on one leg
while using both hands to put my suitcoat back on. Tracks were rough
and it was nigh impossible.
.
Four or five people reached up to steady me and help me on with my
coat.
.
Little old lady a coupla seats away grinned at me and asked, "How's
it feel... having half-a-dozen people help you get dressed?"
.
There's jerks everywhere.
.
There's nice folks everywhere.
.
I've found it's often dependent on MY perspective and behavior.

5. You could be right
although in my case same perspective and behavior, just different venues and people. The NY people were very nice while the NJ commuters not so much.

8. I was about to say, "he stopped seven blocks south of my old 'hood?!"
Why? He had several more miles to go: I believe the last numbered street is 211th or 212th, up by Columbia's Baker Field.

3. New Yorkers are some of the coolest people on the planet
When I was in the service, some of my best friends were New Yorkers

No one needs to convince me that they aren't otherwise.

6. Yeah, but he has a mic and camera.
Lots of people would respond in those circumstances thinking they'll be on TV or something. I'd like to have seen him to it with a hidden mic, instead of one big as a baseball bat, and hidden camera, and see what he gets.

Not disparaging NYers, I just wonder how many people ANYWHERE would have been so willing without the audio/visual equipment, ya know?

:hi:

7. Good point. That's the real test, when no one is around to see it,
not when it could be a show put on for the camera.
